✱✱Book Review✱✱ Silent Rape: Veiled crimes of an evil physician (Faith Pernitelli, MD Book 2) by Tony Scott

It is hard to imagine that a physician we think we know well could be a criminal. We have the affirmation of our family and friends that our physician is trustworthy, competent, and our advocate. But...this riveting novel that dares to ask: What evil can a physician inflict behind the exam room door?

New obstetric residency graduate Dr. Faith Pernitelli is settling into her career when a fellow provider is accused of taking advantage of his position. After she divulges her patients’ stories, Pernitelli discovers that doing the right thing for victims isn’t as straightforward or well received as she expects. Moreover, her Asperger’s diagnosis, which once served as a gift to her profession, is now a curse that threatens everything—including her reputation.

As relationships change during challenges, Pernitelli must decide if fighting for the truth is worth the lies with which her adversaries retaliate. And who will stick with her when their lives are threatened in the crossfires of justice? The consequences of fighting for justice in a quiet New Mexico community are unfathomable in this intense medical thriller where powerful enemies hide the truth—no matter the human cost. The truth may not set you free after all in this riveting medical thriller from a seasoned physician author.

Momma Says: 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐

As the parent of a child with Asperger’s, I tend to be drawn to books with characters that have the same diagnosis. I'm always interested to see how the author will portray those characters. I'd say Tony Scott did very well in showing the struggles and triumphs of Dr, Faith, including the way she thinks and expresses herself. Her thoughts and actions come across as very realistic, which won me over pretty quickly.
The story is gritty and tension-filled, but I expected that given the subject matter. To be honest, I probably would've passed on this one had it not been for Faith's Asperger's, but I'm glad I didn't pass it up. I don't read many medical thrillers, and that was my first thought when I checked out the synopsis. This may be about doctors and one's abuse of power, but it's not what I would consider a medical thriller. It's about so much more than that. The abuse here can and does happen in so many walks of life, and it's something that needs to be brought to light. This may be fiction, but the author tells the story in a way that feels real. He certainly got my blood pumping right along with the characters.
The more I read, the more invested I became in these characters, and the more I wanted to see justice done. I was so engrossed in the story that I read the book in a day. I won't go further into the story to avoid spoilers, so I'll just leave it at Silent Rape is a hard-to-put-down thriller that I definitely recommend. It's very well-written, gripping, and Tony Scott does an excellent job of bringing these characters to life. I for one will be watching for the next Dr. Faith Pernitelli, MD thriller.

But once Tony gets a real job at a rival publishing firm, his grandmother’s response threatens their newfound peace. “What about that dress off to the side?” Tony asked. He craned his neck to see it better.

“Oh, no,” Alice said. She stepped over, blocking Tony’s vision with her body. “I couldn’t. It, er, it doesn’t fit.”

“Then why did you bring it?”

Alice chuckled that nervous chuckle of hers and turned around, closing herself back in the closet as she changed once again. Tony checked his watch, glad they had started this an hour before their reservation. She never answered his question.

“Alright, it’s either this or I’m wearing jeans.”

Alice emerged again. This time she sported a blue button up shirt laying gently over a pair of tan pants that seemed to have a permanent wrinkle to them. Tony squinted, looked at the pants, then looked at Alice.

“Jeans it is!” she declared. She threw her hands in the air in defeat and turned back to the closet.

Tony jumped up and raced over, beating her to the door, holding it open. “C’mon,” he said, leaning over her. “Just try it on.”

“It doesn’t fit,” Alice insisted. She crossed her arms and challenged him. Tony never was one to back down from a challenge.

Smiling at her, Tony reached behind him and felt around for the dress in question. He pulled it off the rack and held it up to her. So that was the real problem. The dress was an off-white top, sheen in places where it didn’t count, with slits running down the sides from the shoulders to the elbows, allowing the perfect peek of skin to show through. It was attached with a small bow to the skirt of the dress, a tan and white tartan style that rose to well above the knees. And with a neckline that swooped down below the collarbone, Tony knew exactly why Alice didn’t want to wear it.

“Doesn’t fit,” Alice said again, her voice shy and uncertain.

Tony held the dress closer to her, tilting his head. “Looks like it would fit to me.”

“Well, looks can be deceiving.”

Alice snatched the dress out of his hand and ducked under his arm, stepping into the closet. Tony frowned and let her close the door. He wandered back to the bed and plopped down, trying to imagine what Alice would look like in that dress. You’d be able to see the delicious curve of her thighs, the smooth texture of her skin, the delicate structure of her neck. She would look divine, especially with a necklace, gold, draped around her, something like a jewel fitted right between her breasts.

The door opened and Alice started to say something, but just kind of squeaked a bit. Tony sat up, his head spinning. Not because he had sat up too fast, but because the image he had just made in his head was nothing compared to the reality of it standing before him.

Alice was beautiful. The dress hugged her curves in all the right places and left just enough to the imagination. It was, obviously, something a little outside of her comfort zone, given the way she was hunched over a bit, arms scrunched forward, fingers picking at the hem of the skirt. But even in a non-confident pose like that, Alice was an image of pure beauty.

“See?” she said, not looking directly at him. “It...it doesn’t fit.”

“What are you talking about?” Tony asked. He surprised himself with how easily he found he could talk. “You look…” he struggled to find the right word, sputtering and mumbling because no word had been invented that described it.

“Awful?” Alice suggested. “Trying too hard? Not dressing for my body type?”

Stunning,” Tony offered. It wasn’t the perfect word, but he wanted her to stop saying such terrible things.

Alice frowned and turned to look in the mirror that hung on the back of the closet door. “You’re lying,” she said.

“I’m really not.” Tony stood behind her, itching to reach out and touch, to place hands on hips, run fingers over arms, press legs to legs. But he held his hands behind his back and resisted the urge. He looked at Alice in the mirror as she did. “You’re beautiful.”

“You’re just saying that.” Alice relaxed a little, her shoulders no longer hunched, her head held a little higher. With every bit of confidence, she looked even more amazing in the dress.

“I’m telling the truth,” Tony argued. Alice turned around to frown at him. He couldn’t hold it back anymore, reaching out to gently cup her cheek. “You always look beautiful.” He dropped his voice to a whisper, feeling an electric heat between them, like the last time he had helped her pick out an outfit. “But in that…” he let his gaze wander, drinking in the full sight of her. “...You’re the most beautiful woman in the world.”

“Is that what you tell all your dates? It’s a very good line.”

Tony’s attention snapped back up. Alice was looking down at her feet. Tony had told a lot of men and women a lot of things. But this one he meant. He moved his hand from Alice’s cheek to her chin, lifting her head back up.

“This isn’t a date,” he reminded her. Then he shrugged with a smile. “What reason would I have to lie?”

Alice pouted a bit and turned back to the mirror, studying herself. “You-you’re sure?” she asked. “I... I look okay?”

“Better than okay. Perfect. Amazing. Wonderful.”

Alice bit her lip and hummed and hawed for a bit. “Well, I suppose...I suppose I could. I-I have been meaning to wear it for a while now…”

“You are free to wear whatever you want,” Tony said, stepping away. “But I meant what I said.” He held his hands out to her. “Stunning.”

We will all struggle and face suffering at some point in our lives. In this important book, Dr. Dillon Caswell, PT, DPT, SCS takes you through why suffering is necessary and why the shift in our healthcare field from transformational to transactional has prolonged the state of suffering and is leading to a systematic healthcare collapse.

Daily you are given misinformation and flat-out lies, such as your vertebrae are out of place, opioids are needed for pain control, the pain experience is due to your degenerating parts, and, phew, we could keep going on! People are giving up their purpose, life-long athlete identities, and what makes them live wholeheartedly due to poor advice from respected figures. You are getting the message of fear, feeling of brokenness and not being enough, and routined rejection, all summed up as the feeling of nope.

It's time to change that... Hope Not Nope will reshape your perspective, thoughts and behaviors, and equip you with an action plan by giving you the information you need to turn all of the misinformation, rejection, and lies - summed up as nope - into the greatest healing agent available: Hope!!!

Praise for Hope Not Nope

"Who wants to live a life of unhappiness and suffering? If you answered "not me", then Hope Not Nope is a book for you! This book perfectly taps into the enduring spirit of humanity. Dr. Craig Lindell, PT, DPT, CSCS. Co-Founder of [P]rehab

"Dillon is uniquely positioned in the fitness industry to bring a vital message to lifelong athletes everywhere - that we must learn how to empower ourselves in order to create lasting positive change. So many former athletes surrender to an identity of being 'broken' or washed up, and their health and self-worth suffer in the process. In this important book, Dillon lays out a clear and actionable path to lead us through some necessary suffering in order to reclaim our physical and mental health, and an ability to continue to participate in the activities that bring us joy."

- Adam Rogers, CF-1. Coach of the World's Top CrossFit Athletes at Training Think Tank

"More than ever people need to feel encouraged and empowered in the modern healthcare world. I was driven away from a career in medicine and towards a career in health and fitness in order to take part in the empowerment movement and give clients tools to take into their own life in order to reclaim their health, confidence, and control over their health outcomes. Dr. Caswell shines a meaningful light on this dilemma that people face. He highlights the problem in a way that can allow anyone to recognize how the system is failing and then supports the reader with tools and frameworks to enhance their health outcomes and reclaim their birthright of a healthy and athletic body."

- Marcus Filly, Founder & Owner of Functional Bodybuilding"

EXCERPT:

Nick leaned on Noory as alcohol emanated from every pore. “It’s gone on forever, you know.”

“What has?” Noory asked.

“Me, saving them. Sometimes not. I’m exhausted, Light.” He looked at her with a sad smile.

“Light? You know my name means light.”

“I do. I can see it, too. It’s like a soft glow,” Nick said, passing a hand over her head to indicate an aura around her. Noory wondered if he could see anything else about her but didn’t dare ask. She was suddenly afraid to know.

“Now,” she said, “how could it have gone on forever? You don’t look like you’re much older than me. You’re what? Thirty?”

Nick laughed as he failed typing the pass code to get into his penthouse. “Third time’s a charm,” he said. The door gave a soft click, and Noory helped him inside.

She looked around at the open space and large windows framing the Atlanta skyline as the city lights twinkled in the night. The place was all polished dark wood floors and leather furniture, but she didn’t see any pictures of family or friends. She led Nick to the couch, and he fell onto it as she sat down beside him. He looked at her.

“Do you hear them, too?” he asked.

“Who?” Noory thought she saw a glimmer of hope in his whiskey-brown eyes.

He placed his hand on the top of her head, warm and strong, if a little clumsy. He ran his fingers down the length of her hair, past her cheek, her neck, and dangerously close to her breast. The look of hope was replaced by desire for the briefest of moments before she marked the instant he withdrew back into himself. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” Nick exhaled and sank deeper into the couch. She watched as his eyelids grew heavier.

“You’d be surprised what I’d believe, Nick.” She leaned over and gently brushed the thick brown hair from his forehead. As she did, her sleeve fell back from her wrist, revealing a small tattoo of an “X” with a tiny hook on the top right corner. Nick’s eyes opened wider in recognition before they rolled back into his head, and he began to softly snore.

Noory passed her fingers across the tiny hooked “X” and wondered if he had really known what it meant but doubted he would remember seeing it in the morning.
