When bleeding hearts appear, what does it mean for seers?

Eli's doing her best to run Nine Lives Investigations, keep the local witch clans happy as the new Mistress of Seers, and navigate her newfound closeness with Dan. Although, she's not really leading anything, and truth be told she's fine with the supernatural community looking after itself. What's not fine is that she and Tessa have been tracking Nathaniel Beauclaire for months, only to hit one dead end after another.

When bleeding hearts start popping up all over town-out of season, mind you-Eli wonders what the universe is trying to tell her. Before she can figure out what the plants mean, someone threatens the clan elders, a group of (lame) ghost hunters begin dogging her every move, and she and Dan are attacked by a demon. Worst of all, each and every clue points toward Eli's ex, Amir, a power-mad seer she hasn't seen in years and never wants to see again, as the mastermind behind every piece of bad news.

Amir's ultimate goal becomes known, Eli hatches a mad plan to stop him for good-then a family secret comes out which could derail everything, including her newfound leadership of the seers. Will she fight for the title she never wanted, or will Amir take everything from her yet again?

Eli never wanted to lead the seers, but she's sure as hell not going down without a fight.

Momma Says: 3 stars⭐⭐⭐

After reading Oleander (book 1 in The Poison Garden series), I had some pretty big expectations for Bleeding Hearts. Now, don't get me wrong - the book is good. The writing is smooth, the story flows well, and the world-building is done organically throughout the story. We also get a more developed mystery this time around, which is great. Nevertheless, some things just fell a little short of the mark for me. I loved the banter between Dan and Eli in Oleander, and while it's nice to see their relationship grow, I really missed the wit and humor in their dialogue. The secondary characters didn't feel as vibrant either, which was disappointing. I realize that things need to progress, and characters need to continue to grow and develop, but I'd have liked to see some elements continue here while still allowing for character growth.

Those are things that I missed in this book, and it's likely that it's all me and not the book, so don't let my 2 cents worth deter you. It's still a solid story, and I'd say urban fantasy readers will really like this series. 

Eli was born to be the Mistress of Seers. Too bad everyone doesn't feel that way.

Eli's bid to be named the Mistress of Seers was a disaster. Those who are witchborn cannot lead the seers, and Eli's just learned that her mother was a witch. But that's not why the clan elders won't follow her—it's because of her newly discovered curse. Instead, they pick her rival and ex-lover, Amir, as their leader.

Since Amir blew up her apartment right before he claimed her rightful position, Eli's been staying at Dan's place. Things are moving fast between them—maybe too fast—then Eli's life goes from bad to worse and she doesn't have time to give in to her insecurities. Dan's job is on the line, Tessa searches for a way to save the witch elders from Amir's cruel plans, and Eli struggles to understand where her curse came from. All of the clues they uncover point toward Eli's mother.

Eli tries not to think about her mother too often. After all, the woman had abandoned Eli as a child, and in a psychiatric ward at that. But Eli needs answers, so she probes her family's history. Along the way she learns that she's more closely entwined with the local witch cans than she ever realized. Then Amir begins killing witches—some with a slow descent into madness, others publicly and messily—and Eli realizes she's out of options. She reaches out to her first enemy, someone who tried to control Eli's destiny before she was ever born: Sarah Allwood, the witch who started it all.

But, what could Sarah have to do with Eli's mother? Eli hasn't seen her in twenty years… then Eli learns that the last time her mother visited her, she had a thornapple blossom in her hair.

Momma Says: 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐

Jennifer Allis Provost really brings her A game with Thornapple. The story has great pacing and plenty of excitement. Dan and Eli are figuring things out as a couple, and we get a pretty thorough gander at Eli's past. The characters have a vibrancy about them, and it's easy to root for the good guys. On the flip side of that, the baddie is pretty darned unlikable, which is what I expect. World-building amps up a bit, and we get some exciting additions to this entertaining world. To be honest, I finished book 2 of The Poison Garden series with mixed feelings, but this one brings me back to what I was hoping for with this series. This is the kind of story you can lose yourself in, making for a nice little getaway without leaving your favorite reading spot.

Jerrod Oluwatoyin Fasan's The Deciding Hour was a little hard to rate, at least in terms of this many stars for this or less than that for something else. So, I finished the book, jotting down notes as I went, and then I gave it some thought and came up with this...

I really liked the premise of this creepy hotel and the game the guests must play in order to escape. Well, like the blurb says, "if they hope to escape." The problem for this group of friends is that they have a fair number of secrets among them, and most of them are really dark. How this "game" knows their secrets isn't so much explained as it's something the reader figures out as the story progresses. There are themes of redemption and repentance, as well as punishment and judgment, and the story does touch on religion, especially in the latter part of the book.

Now, all of that was interesting, and as I mentioned, I like the premise. I feel like this one could have been a really good book with the right execution. Unfortunately, that's where it falls short. The writing is kind of choppy, and the dialogue is stilted. The conversations just don't flow like a normal conversation would, and even in the course of the game, these characters say things that don't really fit with the circumstances. Then there are the characters who desperately needed some development, in my opinion. Most of them are very one-dimensional. I mean, obviously, not every one of this group is gonna make it through the game and out of the motel, but I at least wanted to care what happened to them.

So, as it stands, I liked some things about the book and didn't like some others, leaving me somewhere in the middle. I do think this one has potential and with the right tweaks, that potential could easily be realized.

Oleander is the introduction to Jennifer Allis Provost's Poison Garden series, and it's my introduction to the author. Just an FYI: I don't plan on this being the last time I enjoy either one. This book is so much fun. It's a fast-paced, easy read with an entertaining storyline and engaging characters. There is a mystery to solve, a murder mystery, and our heroine, Eli, has a few helpers along the way. One of those is a possible love interest, Dan, who happens to be a police detective. Then there are the magical friends of Eli and their quirks and colorful personalities. The mystery is a bit predictable, but it was more about the characters, the relationships, and the magic for me. I really liked the banter between Eli and Dan, and I look forward to more of them in the next book in the series - especially since there's an open-ended conclusion in this one. I wouldn't call it a cliffy, but there are questions. The story is easily read in an afternoon, which made for a perfect weekend read, curled up on the couch with my ever-present cup of coffee.

Dragons! Did someone say dragons? Yes, yes, they did. Any time I can fall into a world with dragons, I'm in, and when it's a world as captivating as the one in Ellie Horn's Warrior Hearts series, so much the better. Be forewarned: these books are lengthy, so you're in for an investment in time. That said, these characters are worth the extra pages. This third in the series runs concurrently with book two for quite a bit of it, then it keeps going from there. It's done in a way that isn't boring or repetitive if you've read the series in order, and you won't be lost if you haven't. There's a thread of the story that we don't get in the second book, and that's what we get here. I've enjoyed all of the series, but I think this is my favorite so far. Like the earlier books, this is a slow-burn romance, and the characters are totally engaging. Ellie Horn includes so many terrific magical beings in this series, beings that I've never seen before in any book (and I've read a fair few). Also like the earlier books, this one is full of adventure and danger, but I think my favorite element is the camaraderie between so many magical creatures. The whole thing comes together so well, and I completely enjoyed taking this journey with these characters.

Well, the first Warrior Hearts book took me on an adventure, and this second in the series keeps the momentum going. The world Ellie Horn has created in this series is thoroughly fascinating with magical creatures I've never seen in PNR, urban fantasy, epic fantasy... The list goes on.  What it comes down to is this series is filled with characters that set it apart from the crowd. The book is lengthy - as in 500+ pages - but it really didn't feel that long as I was reading. I know I did a whole lot of "just one more chapter" over the weekend because there is a lot going on in Ellie Horn's magical world. This is a MFM fated mates romance, and it is definitely a slow burn. In fact, these are probably some of the most stubborn fated mates I've come across. So, yes, they were sometimes an exercise in frustration, but it was still an entertaining journey getting there. The romantic triad aren't the only intriguing characters. Even the secondary characters are engaging, and they all add something to the storyline.

Technically, this is a standalone in the Warrior Hearts series, but I'd still recommend reading the books in order to get the full experience, especially since there's a continuing subplot. There are also several characters from the first book that play an important part in this one, which makes me happy since we get to catch up with them.

First, check out that cover! All those elements that stand out! And to think there's all of that and more inside. This is my first experience with Ellie Horn, and I am impressed. I was surprised at how long this first in the series is, and maybe it is a little longer than absolutely necessary, but I liked these characters so much that I didn't mind the extra time with them.

There is a lot going on in this fascinating world Ellie Horn has created and a lot of characters to get acquainted with. And here's where I was most impressed: the character introductions and world-building are done organically throughout the story, so there aren't a bunch of those annoying info dumps. We also get some shifters and various creatures that you don't often see in this type of fantasy, which is a nice change and keeps things fresh. This is also a MFM fated mates shifter romance, and it's a slow burn - another refreshing change from the norm.

The characters are likable and well developed - I guess I should say that a lot of the characters are likable. Some, not so much, but that's to be expected, especially with the intrigue, suspense, and danger our characters face. The romance is easy to root for. It is a fated mates love story, but I really like how the characters get to know each other and how things progress between them. There's a fair amount of snark and sarcasm, and I do love some witty dialogue.

According to the blurb, Ice is a standalone in the series, but I really hope these characters at least make an appearance in future books. Needless to say, I'm definitely gonna be reading the rest of the series. I'll happily escape to Ellie Horn's imaginative world of shifters and their fated mates.

✱✱Book Review✱✱ The Neighbors by Alex Witcher

The Neighbors turned out to be a blast to read. There are plenty of twists and turns, and the pacing makes it hard to put down. It's one of those "just one more chapter" kinds of books where you finally look up and it's the middle of the night or dinner is burned. The story did keep me talking to the characters - yeah, I do that a lot. I talked to Ellie and Henry a lot, and a few times, I really wanted to shake them. But if they'd figured things out too quickly, it would've been a much shorter book and not nearly as entertaining. I don't want to give anything away because this is one book that should be enjoyed spoiler-free. What I will say about this one is Alex Witcher is a talented thriller writer. The story is well written and well-plotted, and it even managed to surprise my jaded old self a couple of times. This is an impressive debut, and I look forward to seeing what this author does next.

✱✱Book Review✱✱ The Fire Witch: A Zvi Jayden Novel by Sasha Marshall

 

She just wants to catch a killer, but he wants to capture her heart.

A killer vampire is on the loose, and the vampire king wants my help tracking him down. I don’t blame him. It’s my job as a bounty hunter to chase criminals, and I’m good at it, much to the dismay of his vampire subjects.

Teaming up with the enemy is the last thing I’d normally do, but when Killian claims I’m his girlfriend in order to save me from his evil master, I have no choice but to repay the favor.

What I don’t count on is how persistent the sexy ruler will be in his efforts to win my heart, nor how hard he’ll be to resist when he tries to change the rules on our fake relationship.

Will I be able to keep from crossing the line with him so I can catch the murderer before it’s too late? Or will my heart become another vampire casualty?

Can the vampire king light a fire in the bounty hunter’s heart?

Momma Says: 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Fire Witch is a mile-a-minute urban fantasy that doesn't let up. It's like one of those movies where you know if you blink, you'll miss something, and you really don't want to miss anything. This was my first read by Sasha Marshall, and she knocked it out of the park. I love the genre, but I'm really picky about it. This one gives me pretty much everything I could ask for. A snarky, full of sass heroine, a sexy love interest, and a whole passel of secondary characters who are just as interesting as our heroine and hero. Zvi is strong and determined, and I love her sharp wit. We get a bunch of different supernatural beings, from shifters to vampires to witches, and I enjoyed the many differences between them and how they interacted. The only drawback for me is the world-building - well, maybe the shortfall on world-building. On one hand, what world-building we get is done organically throughout the story, which is a big plus for me. On the other hand, the details come up short on some points. There is a bit of a cliffy, and the likelihood of another book may account for the shortfall of world-building, so that's something to be considered. One of my favorite elements here is the feeling of a found family. I won't go too far into that to avoid spoilers, but I love how close some of these characters are whether they have a blood connection or not. All things considered, The Fire Witch is a fast-paced, entertaining read, and I'll be interested to see what's next for Zvi and company.

✱✱Book Review✱✱ The Gift That Keeps On Taking by B. J. Irons

 

First, he took away my coming out moment.

Next, he took my scratch-off and won $77,777 for himself.

Then, he took my first boyfriend away from me.

Despite how crazy he drives me, I am still obsessed with thinking about him. It’s sick!

Christian Delgado is the gift that keeps on taking.

The Perkins and Delgado families meet on the weekend between Christmas and New Year’s annually at their joint single-family home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. This long-standing tradition has become an annoyance to Liam Perkins, a high school senior, who is still in the closet to his family. Liam is forced to have to hang out with the Delgado’s son, Christian, during this yearly holiday get together.

Everything about Christian annoys Liam. From his suave looks, to his popularity and athleticism, and even his laid back, carefree personality. On their most recent Christmas family vacation, Liam planned to come out to his parents, but somehow Christian managed to make that night all about him, too.

Liam has had to put up with Christian taking everything from him and he is determined to somehow put a stop to it. But little does Liam know that Christian has kept some secrets about him for years that will soon surface, causing Liam to second-guess all of his former opinions about Christian Delgado.

Momma Says: 3 stars⭐⭐⭐

The Gift That Keeps on Taking feels most like a coming of age/growing up story to me. And I'll just say it, Liam has A LOT of growing up to do. The book covers about 6 years, from Christmas of Liam and Christian's senior year in high school forward with most of the story jumping from Christmas to Christmas and a little of the in-between thrown in. The jumps in the timeline work well here since the joint holiday vacations are when Liam and Christian spend the most time together.

When I read the blurb, I was hoping for a fun story, maybe even a few laughs, but I didn't really find that here. Most of that falls on my opinion of Liam. He was just an unlikable character all the way around for most of the book. I tried telling myself that some of that can be blamed on his age, but he's petty and annoying, and he blames pretty much everything on Christian. If Christian got something or did something Liam wanted, it was like Liam thought Christian only did whatever it happened to be to one-up Liam. We only get Liam's point of view, so Christian is basically a secondary character, and we don't really get to know him. I feel like this story could've benefitted from a dual point of view to give us Christian's side of things. Maybe Liam would've been a little more likable then.

There are some things that happen in the latter part of the book to turn things around a bit, but getting there felt much longer than it actually was in pages. I have read BJ Irons before this book, and quite liked his crime thriller, Sinfluenced. Maybe it's just a case of not the book for me, but this one fell somewhere in the fair to middlin' range. It's not bad, but it's not something I'd read again or that would come to mind to recommend.

Bryan Hoenig has it all.

Momma Says: 5 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sinfluenced is perfectly titled and wonderfully written. It's dark, it's sexy, it's shocking, it's impossible to put down, and touching on the world of social media influencers and obsession, it's current. Now, I'm not going to sit here and try to convince anyone that the story doesn't require some suspension of disbelief, at least I really, really hope it does but we learn every day about how dangerous obsession can be. So who knows? However, suspension of disbelief or no, I was on the edge of my seat so many times while reading this book, and that's not even what impressed me most. Nope, that goes to the characters - or the author's development of them. The thing about Bryan and Vic is that they're human, and Irons captures that completely. Neither of these guys comes across as all bad or all good. Granted, Vic's particular brand of crazy is always right there below the surface, but there were moments when I found myself almost feeling sorry for him. Only almost, but he's convinced of his feelings for Bryan, and the author makes us feel that. Then, there's Bryan, and I've gotta say that I didn't particularly like him a lot of the time. He comes across as incredibly vain. A guy that has it all and knows it, and doesn't care to flaunt it. But there's a flip side to Bryan, one that is unsure and lets social media control his feelings. One negative comment from a stranger can be devastating. Like I said, they're human, and while I'm glad they aren't real, especially one of them, they sure felt real. 

This crazy, twisted ride was my first experience with BJ Irons, but it definitely won't be my last. It's a must-read, and one I won't soon forget.

Keep My Soul Sealed Shut - isn't that a terrific title? And it has a terrific cover to match. Sadly, that was the best of it for me. The book is a novella, easily read in about an hour, so I was surprised at the slow start. To be honest, I even wondered once or twice if I was reading the right book because I expected so much more than I found. With words like sinister, psychological thriller, mind games, etc. in the blurb, I really expected Kane to throw some big twists my way. There are a couple, but I had already guessed some of it, and the ending was a head-scratcher. Here's the thing, this book had so much potential. Kane's writing is good - a little choppy at times, but not bad - and where he went with this one made for an intriguing premise. I just didn't get that tension I look for in a thriller, and I didn't get any chemistry between Jax and Luca. Maybe I needed some backstory for them, but they didn't feel like a couple to me. Whatever the reason, I really struggled with this one, and since it was a quick read, I even went back and read through again to see if maybe my mind wasn't all in the first time. I felt the same the second time around. So, I guess it's safe to say that this book was not for me.
