In the heat and oilfields, John and his pals believe a rock concert is the answer to their discontent, never realizing the trip will transform them forever—if they survive it.

In 1966, John Pierce and his friends are discontented teens shackled by life in a West Texas oilfield boomtown. As they swelter in summer heat amid thousands of oil wells, desperation creeps in.

When news of an electrifying rock concert captures their hearts, they leave on a quest for music, girls, and self-indulgence. No one warned them about the nightmarish occurrences they could face on their dream trip.

Based on a true adventure in an out-of-the-ordinary setting, THE CONCERT is an unforgettable exploration of friendships and dangers looming along the stepping stones to adulthood.

About the Author

Lawson McDowell was almost born in the backseat of a Buick, but after a wild ride through the wheat fields near Dodge City, Kansas, they arrived at the hospital in the nick of time. That was in 1950. It seems Lawson has been in a hurry ever since.

When he was five, his family moved to Texas, establishing roots in the small town of Andrews, where his father worked in the oil industry. Lawson grew up with rattlesnakes, cowboys, and roustabouts in the rough-and-tumble oil boom years of the 50s and 60s.

After graduation from Texas Tech University, Lawson went to work for Southern Pacific Railroad. He advanced through the ranks, eventually leading operations in Los Angeles, Tucson, and Kansas City. At the corporate level, he served as director of safety in Denver and, for a time, chaired the Association of American Railroads Safety Section in Washington. D. C.

Lawson attended executive classes at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While MIT upgraded his skills, he developed a love for Boston and the Red Sox.

After serving many years as Director of Network Operations for Union Pacific, Lawson is now enjoying retirement with his greatest passion, his wife, Virginia. You can contact Lawson through his website at www.LawsonMcDowell.com

Opening during the Nazi occupation of Greece, best-selling No Limits is a true-life adventure story of Nick Haritatos. From his humble beginnings in war-torn Greece to southern Africa, Haritatos began a remarkable journey to success, buying his first business at sixteen and creating a portfolio of successful companies in Rhodesia, South Africa, and the United States.

Buffeted by winds of sweeping political and cultural changes, Haritatos pledged to make his own destiny, regardless of any obstacles. Haritatos lived a life of adventure set amidst dirt roads in tribal lands in Africa, harrowing days of the Rhodesian Bush War, numerous board rooms, and one-of-a-kind ocean-view homes.

With a foreword by Jack Canfield, No Limits gives readers a glimpse into the experiences and mindset of a man who faced numerous obstacles with unwavering confidence and a unique ability to build relationships with people from every walk of life. These relationships, coupled with the determination, passion and focus that he cultivated, gave Haritatos opportunities to build multi-million-dollar businesses, become a successful pilot, walk the 1,200-mile California Coastal Trail from the US-Mexico border north to the Oregon border, create a beautiful family and circle of friends, and achieve almost every other goal he set for himself.

No Limits will both entertain and inspire you. It is full of heart-warming relationships, drama, intrigue, and achievement, set against a background of tumultuous change. Woven into the text and highlighted in the appendix, No Limits includes Haritatos' pillars of business and personal success.

If you want to become the architect of your own destiny, regardless of your circumstances, this book is for you.

About the Author

Nick Haritatos is a successful entrepreneur, soccer player, pilot, and devoted family man whose life experience has spanned four countries on three continents. From his humble beginnings in war-torn Greece to southern Africa, Haritatos began a remarkable journey to success, buying his first business at sixteen and creating a portfolio of successful companies in Rhodesia, South Africa, and the United States.

Buffeted by winds of sweeping changes, Nick pledged to make his own destiny, regardless of any obstacles. He lived a life of adventure set amidst mud huts and dirt roads in tribal lands in Africa, harrowing days of the Rhodesian Bush War, numerous board rooms, international trips to over forty countries, and one-of-a-kind ocean view homes.

His business career stretches across twenty-three companies and over fifty years in manufacturing, retail, service, and commercial, retail and residential real estate. With a knack for spotting untapped potential in businesses and people, Nick treasures his vast network of friends as intensely as his financial success. He loves to celebrate life with music and dancing whenever possible.

Early on, Nick developed a unique and flexible lifestyle model that allowed him to oversee multiple businesses simultaneously while devoting plenty of time to his wife and children. With his decision to create his own destiny, Nick maintains control over his life and his future even under challenging circumstances, when most others followed tradition.  His motto is “I make events. Events don’t make me.”

An avid athlete, Nick has played and coached soccer for most of his life. Nick has team members who’ve played soccer with him for nearly twenty five years in San Diego. As of the writing of this book, he’s played in more than 2,500 matches, as well as completed several marathons. He plans to be playing soccer when he is eighty years old and beyond.

Outside of his family, one of his proudest achievements was hiking the 1,200-mile California Coastal Trail.

Today Nick uses his considerable business and life experience to mentor and inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders, when he isn’t on the soccer field or planning his next walk.

Nick is available to speak to groups interested in business and personal success. For more information on his speaking and mentoring work, visit his website at www.nolimitsbynick.com

On Sale for $0.99 for a limited time

Lionel, a necromancer and consultant for the Brunswick Police Department, wants nothing to do with immortals. Specifically, he wants nothing to do with Lucifer, who shows up on his doorstep one day with a ridiculous proposal. Lucifer, also known as the Devil, wants Lionel to be his pretend boyfriend. Except the pretend part is something the Devil doesn’t really seem to care for.

Lucifer has read enough romance novels to know that a good dose of forced proximity might be just the thing to get the stubborn necromancer he desires into his bed. The Devil’s plans are soon complicated when Lionel proves more uncooperative and oblivious to love than Lucifer could ever anticipate.

While the Devil wants to claim Lionel, all Lionel wants is to get away from Lucifer. Meanwhile, magic users are being murdered in the city. Lionel cannot escape the implications of those murders for long, and the case soon takes a different turn. Will Lionel be able to escape the Devil’s thrall, or will the necromancer fall for the immortal seducer?

Publisher’s Note: The Devil’s Necromancer contains scenes involving dubious consent that some readers may find offensive.

It was past midnight, and the stars that looked like sprinkles of white chocolate in the velvety dark night sky were overshadowed by the city lights and the waxing moon. I lay on the embankment, North Bridge’s metal frame rising just to my right and further hiding the chocolate sprinkle stars. My feet were wet, but I didn’t mind, not the embankment or the wet feet or the stars melting away in the light and the artificial structures around me. The zombie was oozing all over me from its -- his -- caved-in skull, and I did mind that. Zombie ooze was a bitch to get out of clothes, even if I’d given up on wearing colors years ago. Black simply was the safest bet for a necromancer.

Zombies reeked when they weren’t really fresh, and this one was ripe -- fish-market-in-the-summer-heat-three-days-after-closing ripe. I looked up and considered my life choices, all of which had led me here.

“Do you need CPR?” someone said. It was a warm, manly voice, and I was reasonably sure it could make chocolate melt, star-shaped or otherwise.

I stuffed my self-pity away and turned my head to get a better look at the speaker. He was as handsome as a devil, with skin that looked like marble in the glow of the city at night. His hair shimmered liquid black, but it might have been some shade of brown in proper lighting. It went well past his ears and looked styled with care to get that messy, I just got up out of bed after a night of hard fucking look.

“Why the fuck would I need CPR?” I asked. My voice didn’t sound like I’d just considered crying a moment ago, and I was proud of that.

The guy shrugged. “It’s hard to tell with humans. Your kind is so accident prone, and you seem to be having trouble breathing. Or maybe you hit your head? Do you remember how you got here?”

Did he fucking think I was suffering from amnesia or a head injury or something? “I’m having trouble breathing because I have a fucking dead zombie on my chest, asshat,” I said. In my considered necromantic opinion, I was being perfectly polite, even though I couldn’t be sure what kind of creature the guy was. I’d given him a quick glance with my mage sight, and human he was not.

Jeez, I hated gods and otherworldly beings.

“All zombies are dead,” Mr. Sexy said. “It’s a prerequisite. This one seems to have had its brainstem properly destroyed, however.”

“Oh, smarty-pants, thanks a bunch for the lecture. The basics of necromancy have ever escaped me, even after I raised my very first corpse thirteen fucking years ago.” It had been a blackbird that had died when he crashed into a window at my school. I had cradled the poor thing in my hands as it breathed its last, had cried, and that had triggered my necromancer power. Pretty boy did not need to know that. Every other person I’d ever told had made fun of me for it.

“You could have suffered a head injury with amnesia. How am I supposed to know what you know?” He walked toward me. His movements were silent, cat-like, and more elegant than was right. Even despite the zombie oozing out on me, my cock couldn’t quite ignore him. Seriously, though, what was up with his fixation on first aid and amnesia?

He grabbed the zombie by the legs and pulled the dead-dead corpse off me. “Oh. You caved in its skull with a rock,” he said when he saw the murder weapon in question, the goo glistening on its stony surface. Well, it wasn’t really a murder weapon, seeing as how the zombie had been dead, but details. “How traditional.” He held out a hand to me, and I took it and let him pull me back to my feet. “I’m Lucy, by the way. Short for Lucifer, but I prefer Lucy. As in Lucy Westenra, the woman who almost single-handedly turned Dracula into the first reverse harem romance novel ever before she made the wise decision to claim immortality instead. She was such an underrated character, and I really don’t know why people don’t like her more.”

I dusted myself off. Didn’t help with the wet feet or the zombie ooze, which I really only distributed, like soft butter on hot toast. The shirt I was wearing was ruined. Good thing I had a dozen other plain black shirts just like it back home. “Maybe because she fucking ate children.”

He shrugged. “Well, everyone has a craving now and then. No one judges women’s monthly chocolate cravings, and I don’t see how that was so much worse.”

My brain caught up with the conversation. Lucifer? The Lucifer? The fucking Morning Star, seducer of stuffy virgins and lover of apples? I looked at him. Up at him. Asshole was tall and handsome, the kind of guy I could only ever talk to with about three drinks in me. “You’re the Devil? Satan? Beelzebub?”

“Lu-cy,” he said, slowing down as if he was reconsidering the brain damage thing. Even his eyebrows were perfect, which I only noticed because he pulled one of those up, something most people couldn’t do in real life. He could. And he looked hot doing it. Hotter.

Only $.99 June 9th – 12th!!

It’s hard to tell when someone’s soul changes, especially when dark energy has a price.

An unexpected adventure of two brothers who accidentally travel to another world. Henry and Moris—just a few short months after their father mysteriously goes missing—are playing their favorite make-believe game when suddenly they are transported to a different universe, leaving behind their mother and sister. When each brother is captured by warring wizarding houses, the Veneficums and the Milaculums, they stand the chance of losing each other forever.

The boys have too many unanswered questions, and they don’t know who to trust, but in their attempt to find each other and return home, the brothers discover truths about themselves––and their father––they never could have imagined.

In a strange world where wizards fight each other and are not what they seem, who can the brothers trust? More importantly, will they get home together?

Excerpt

Blue energy sparked through the black circle in the sky as a body fell, smashing the ground with a thud. The portal vanished.

The brother rapidly stood up. “No, no, no, — Why? What the hell have you done?” he howled to himself, searching for the portal. He paced side to side, hands wringing. This can’t be happening. This can’t be happening, he kept thinking. A lump formed in his gut, and his breath quickened. The more he thought about it, the more his heart raced. The tension moved through his chest, up his throat, until he unleashed a scream of fury.

It was partly his fault. He could’ve pulled his brother inside the portal.

He hesitated. To his left, a swirl of dust. To his right, a rolling bush. “Where am I?” he asked out loud. He was standing on a road, alone in a desert, clutching a small, strange animal horn.

Damn it,” he yowled, staring at the horn. He raised his arm to toss it away; then, a thought struck him. He ground his teeth in frustration because he couldn’t get rid of it—it was the only way to get back to the portal.

He clenched the horn, face reddened in anger, and yelled, “Itenelum, Dantus.” He repeated, “Itenelum, Dantus.”

Nothing. The horn wasn’t activating.

He headed down the road. The radiant sun beat down. He hoped to return to where he had suffered the strangest experience he’d ever had.

In the distance, metal clattered. He raised his burned face, eyes squinting at the smudge on the horizon, and eyed a billboard. The advertisement promised Coffee Cheer, Morning Cheers.

He gasped, widening his eyes. “The sign.”

He hastened to the billboard, looking for the dirt road. He stopped, and his face dropped again. No dirt road, only bushes. He sprinted to the bushes and yanked several from the ground. “Where is the road?”

Could he get back to the cabin? There was no dirt road to lead him.

He walked a few paces away from the bushes, his hands dirty and bleeding. Now he thought of getting home. But had his family survived? He walked toward his house, his weary feet dragging on the ground.

He recalled his experience and sensed ominous times ahead. As if the ones he’d already lived through weren’t enough.

Soon, the hum of a motor approached as an old pickup drove towards him. Finally. Covered in dust, he waved the vehicle down as he tucked the horn in his jacket.

The driver squinted at him, then shrugged and slowed to a halt. He backed up and addressed the brother. The driver was bald, with wrinkles on his forehead and a long white beard.

At the obvious question he wanted to answer, I just waved my hand for no reason. Instead, he said, “Yes, please. I have been walking for hours and have no cell phone.”

“Where’re you headed?”

Anywhere out of here, the brother thought. “Near Austin,” he said with a forced smile.

“Hop in. I’m going that way.”

“Thank you very much, sir.”

The clock on the dashboard flashed a useless twelve o’clock, and the radio was off. The brother hesitated to ask about the date; a scruffy guy on the side of the road asking that sounded normal, right? He remained silent.

The driver held a one-sided conversation that the brother mostly ignored. He stared out the window, his hand on the horn in his pocket and his mind on the experience before the black hole. The driver kept chattering.

When they finally arrived at the outskirts of Austin, he asked the driver to drop him off near his house. He stepped out and, embarrassedly, offered only a thank-you. He had no money.

He hesitated a second in trepidation after the pickup left him, then rushed toward home.

There were no cars in the house.

“Oh, no,” he wailed. He feared death had visited his family.

The brother approached the door and rang the bell. No one answered. He searched for the hidden key below the flowerpot—it was still there—and went inside.

“Mom? Maya? Are you here?”

No one answered. He glanced around and sighed, smiling. He saw a picture of them. They still lived in the house.

He needed to figure out the date. He hurried to a laptop, opened it, and waited for it to boot up.

Ok, I'm done talking in 3rd person.

I try to meditate every day; I also enjoy sports, so I exercise at least four times a week.

The book The Horn's Hoax: The Forbidden Instrument is my debut novel, and it has a special meaning because the idea came from how I play with my children.

The writing of this book has been an unexpected pleasure for me, as I would never imagine myself writing a book. It all began in September 2019. It was intended to be a ten-page brief story. But as I wrote, my imagination and my taste for writing kept me working. I realized on a blank page I can create amazing things and let my imagination fly.

Words kept coming, and I discovered the hard work of building a story. With the help of many people, I gave my heart to create my first "Art".

Aunt Maude swept in, a tray rattling with unmatched Lambethware dishes. “Ye’ll have him looking like a prince, Flora.”

“I was thinking Hades,” Anne said dryly.

Three gazes speared her. Startled and confused from Aunt Maude and Aunt Flora while Will managed an amused smirk. All that lordly attire is sinking into his veins. She waved gracefully, a gesture to make her grandmother proud.

“It’s all the black and gold. I’m not sure of it.”

Aunt Maude set her burden on the table and turned to inspect Will. “He looks fine tae me, but goodness knows I don’t cavort in higher circles.”

“None of us do, except Cecelia,” Anne said. London’s lofty addresses had been her grandmother’s ambition for her, not hers.

“Well, Cecelia’s no’ here tae educate us.” Aunt Maude began setting the table as if the matter was done.

“I like the black and gold,” he said.

Anne eyed Will who eyed her boldly back. A silent skirmish was afoot.

“With his size, shouldn’t we consider something paler? A creamy yellow or a sky blue?” she suggested.

Creamy yellow? Will mouthed.

“And have him looking like a cake?” Aunt Maude huffed. The woman had stern opinions about London’s mincing fops. Tartans were dark, serious shades, which met with her approval. “What do ye think, Flora?”

“Oh, I don’t know.”

Will was the center of a feminine universe, arms out at his sides, his smirk growing as if he could do this all day. Rather sure of himself. Or was he glad to needle Anne? Revenge at finding her door locked last night? She’s heard his pillow thumping last night.

“Pale colors are the height of fashion,” Anne said defensively. “I’m sure we can find something else in that sea chest. Something better suited to make him look more . . . or perhaps less of—” her hand flapped inelegantly “—of this . . .”

“Of what?” Aunt Maude pursed her lips.

Aunt Flora waited, and Will was the devil’s own, his smirk increasing.

She was in a verbal pit, and shoveling herself in deeper. “Lighter colors would be safer.” She hesitated. “Black and gold simply is . . .”

“Is what?” Will goaded.

She was on a knife’s edge, her thumbnail digging an indent into her quill. Irritation flared. Other indescribable emotions surged.

“You look dangerous.”

There. She’d said it.

Will’s predatory smile spread. “Black and gold it is.”

USA Today Bestselling author Gina Conkle writes lush Viking romance and sensual Georgian romance.
