Writer Jackson Powers returns to Brazen Bridge, the quirky small town that inspired him as a boy, to fulfill a promise to his recently-deceased best friend, Alec. There, he meets straight B&B owner, Cane Spencer, who has sworn off relationships—with women. It’s lust at first sight, but not love, and soon both Jackson and Cane struggle with slow-burning desire.
Slow Burn is a 62,000-word gay romance. It includes first time and forced proximity themes. It is the first book in the Brazen Bridge series.
Momma Says: 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐
This first in the Brazen Bridge series pulls out all the feels. From grief to healing to romance, Declan Rhodes covers it all, and he even throws in a bit of wit and humor to keep things from getting too heavy. I liked both Jackson and Cane, and they both tug at the heartstrings. You can't help but want to give Jackson a big ol' hug for comfort as he deals with his loss. But Cane - I was torn when it came to Cane and I was just as likely to want to hit him as hug him through much of the book. Funny thing is no matter how much he frustrated me with his back and forth, I still wanted good things for him. His confusion about relationships and orientation had an air of innocence, and I kept wanted someone to sit him down and explain it all. How things turn out for these guys would be venturing into spoiler territory, so I'll leave it at that. What I will say is that I truly enjoyed this book - from the emotion to the steamy fun to the secondary characters to the location. It all comes together so well, and I can't wait to see what's in store for the world of Brazen Bridge.
