Virtual Book Tour: These Are Not My Words (I Just Wrote Them) by Donovan Hufnagle

Author Interview

Do you ever wish you were someone else? Who?

At this stage of my life, I am happy with who I am and how I came to be, which is really what my current book These Are Not My Words (I Just Wrote Them) is about. As a child, we all desire to be something great, at least, I did. We also, I think, try to imagine what it would be like to put on another pair of shoes. We aspire to be astronauts, doctors, lawyers, firemen, policemen, writers, and so on. For me, I wanted to be a rockstar. Shout out to James Hetfield of the band Metallica. I have this great Halloween picture of me dressed up as Hetfield singing one of his songs into a hairbrush microphone with two of my close friends cheering me on in the background. Even as a young adult, I still imagined being someone else, at least, for one Halloween night. And maybe, just maybe, I have become that figurative rockstar, a rockstar to those that love me.

What did you do on your last birthday?

Geez, how can remember something that happened so long ago? I’m kidding of course, but I’m reaching or have reached that point in life that birthdays are not as important as they used to be. No more piƱatas or ice cream bashes. I went out to dinner with my wife and children, my in-laws, a few of my wife’s Tias and Tios, and a couple of my close friends. We celebrated through food and drink.

What part of the writing process do you dread?

I don’t dread any part of the writing process per se; however, I find that some aspects of writing can be challenging when forced. For example, I have tried to write daily, a little bit or a lot a bit every day but that has been challenging. My fingers seem to rebel against this forceful action. I’ve tried, inspired by other writers’ habits, famous and not so famous, but I just can’t seem to sit and type or scratch down words ever day. However, a while back, I remember a writer (I can’t remember who right now) saying that most of their writing happens in their head. Bam! It hit me. I do the same thing. I write in my car, in my office, in bed, in my dreams, in the shower, walking, sitting, eating...I’m writing all the time.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

This relates to the previous question, I think. Every writer at some level suffers from the inability to rustle in ideas and spit the words out, but as I previously stated, I am writing all the time in my head. If I am not conjuring up new ideas, I tend to repeat the old ones until something attaches itself to the old to make new. In other words, I repeat stuff, in my car for example, over and over in my head until the next word or idea comes along and extends that thought.

I also try not to wait for inspiration to hit me. I love it when I have a bolt of lightning strike, but I tend to use history and research as a method to compensate for the lack of inspiration. I go out and find my inspiration rather than sit in a cold dank waiting room, holding number 81 in my hand when the current number is only 3.

Tell us about your latest release.

If I had to describe the poetry in my current book These Are Not My Words (I Just Wrote Them), I would say they explore identity. Not only do these poems hold glimpses of some of my own personal experiences and observations such as the poem “First Loves,” a longer narrative poem that peers into my childhood, into my neighborhood friends, the book also follows my journey as a poet, highlighting my growth as a writer by demonstrating the different styles I have come to love—from blues poems to longer personal narratives, from villanelles that use the words from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to experimental forms like the poem “Jenga,” that is a text-message-conversation between my wife and I. I write poetry inspired by reality, pop culture, music, television, movies, politics, and so much more, and docupoetry that includes those realities. All these poems, whether they tap into controversial topics such as the poem “Sussudio Saves, The Day After, #6,” which introduces the divides of politics through the first five songs that played in my truck after January 6th or poems that reflect on family such as the poem “Refurbished,” which focuses on my wife’s tio and an armchair, tell something about self.

Echoing Chuck Palahniuk’s statement. “Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everyone I’ve ever known,” this collection explores identity. These poems drift down rivers of old, using histories private and public and visit people that I love and loathe. Through heroes and villains, music and cartoons, literature and comics, science and wonder, and shadow and light, each poem canals the various channels of self and invention. As in the poem, “Credentials,” “I am a collage of memories and unicorn stickers…[by] those that have witnessed and been witnessed.”

Excerpt

Refurbished

Susan taught me that poetic energy lies
between the lines, white noise scratching
and clawing between images, ideas,
things…

And like a poem,
the chair was molded by my Tio’s hands,
an antique wooden upholstered desk chair.

My Tio moved from Durango, Mexico
to Forth Worth in 1955.

He became a mason and wood worker.

He bricked the stockyards

He built the signs

He died in 2005.

Now,
matted. Worn. Faded floral design. Wood
scarred like healing flesh.

The arms torn, ratted by the heft of his arms
and the stress of the days. The foam peeks
out.

The brass upholstery tacks rusted. I count
1000 of the. With each,
I mallet a fork-tongue driver under its head.
A tap, tap, tapping until it sinks beneath the tack,
until the tack springs from its place.
I couldn’t help but think of a woodpecker.
A tap, tap, tapping into Post Oak,
a rhythm…each scrap of wood falling to the ground
until a home is formed.
Until each piece of wood like the tacks removed
shelter something new.

I remove the staples, the foam, the fabric,
the upholstery straps
until it’s bones.
I sand and stain
until its bones shine.

I layer and wrap its bones with upholstery straps,
foam, fabric, staples and tacks.
New tacks, Brass medallions
adorning the whole, but holding it
all together—
its bones
its memories,
its energy.

The Poseidon Project by E. William Podojil Virtual Book Tour

Author Interview

Do you have any tattoos?  Where? When did you get it/them? Where are they on your body?

EWP: I do not have tattoos. My youngest son has enough for the family. He is studying to become a tattoo artist.

Is your life anything like it was two years ago?

EWP: Some things in my life are the same, but so much has changed in the last two years. For one, I’m no longer in a high-stress executive job having retired at the end of 2022. I’m much healthier physically and mentally and exercise much more than I have in the last ten years. I’m launching my novel and the first in a series and have nearly finished book two. I am learning so much about the publishing process and making an audiobook. My first novel was published in 2004, which was before e-books, web streaming, audible, social media and three years before the first iPhone! The world has changed and will continue to evolve, so I hope to keep up with technology.

How long have you been writing?

EWP: I’ve written my whole life for fun, but serious writing started about twenty years ago with my first book and attending screenwriting courses at UCLA. That’s when I knew writing was what I wanted to do when I grew up!

What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?

EWP: I look at writing a lot like carving a sculpture out of stone. The sculpture is already in the block of stone, it just needs to be revealed. Start with lots of ideas first and then sculpt your story by removing the nonessential parts of it. Another piece of advice I offer is don’t try to be perfect right out of the gate. Make mistakes, put your story away, come back to it and continue to improve your craft.

Tell us something about your newest release that is NOT in the blurb.

EWP: The Poseidon Project, at its core, is about friendship, love and reconciling one’s past and accepting it order to move on and live a happy life. The characters come from diverse backgrounds; women, men, young, old, gay, straight, multiple races, cultures, religions and like humans do, they have conscious and unconscious biases about each other. Instead of letting their differences divide them, they leverage their collective strengths to creatively solve some big challenges.

The Poseidon Project is an international suspense thriller and the first book in The Herb Society Mysteries series

Molly Halloran and her friends have a secret past.  Their bucolic retirement is suddenly upended when Molly’s husband is abducted and held for a steep ransom.  Now she, her friends, her tech executive son, Lukas and his Air Force pilot boyfriend must race against the clock and travel halfway around the world to meet the kidnappers’ demands.  But when they learn why her husband has been abducted, they realize how high the stakes truly are.  Molly and her friends now must face their past in order to save the future.  But not only their futures; the world’s.

The Spectrum’s engines roared, providing thrust to power the plane to takeoff speed as it lurched ahead down the runway. The plane’s power was evident as the acceleration force held them in their seats. This plane was designed to go fast, and the cabin was surprisingly quiet. As they hit takeoff speed, Taylor pulled back, and the nose lifted off the ground, followed shortly by the rest of the plane. The landing gear retracted immediately into the fuselage.

The passengers quietly stared out the large porthole windows as the Goose climbed out of Tucson. It was almost dusk, and Lukas spotted thousands of saguaro cacti dotting the sides of mountains that cast distorted shadows that looked like goblins. The exhilarating views captivated everyone. That is, for everyone except Donna, who sat rigid in her seat, hands clenched and her eyes squeezed shut. Lukas shot her a thumbs up in thanks to Donna—already not a fan of flying, but all in for a fifteen-hour flight halfway around the world just to support her friend. The plane’s angle leveled off, and soon Taylor emerged from the cockpit, curious how well the passengers had settled into their home for the next fifteen hours. Linda and Betty had their eyes shut, as Donna distracted herself with her laptop.

Taylor walked back to the crew stateroom for a few minutes. He and Diego had a brief conversation before Diego walked up to the cockpit. Lukas moved toward the back of the plane to set up his inflight internet connection and workspace. Linda and Betty awoke, startled and disoriented after their brief power nap, while Donna adjusted their seats to face each other, a small table between them. Betty remarked that it reminded her of a train.

“How’re you doing?” Taylor asked Lukas.

“Just trying to get set up here. I’ve got a lot of work to do on the way to Dubai. I need to connect with my team in Croatia to get some data and ideas on how I can get this ransom together. It’s still early morning there, so I’ll wait a few hours.”

“Why don’t you get some sleep until then?” Taylor suggested. I’m gonna try to myself. You mind?” Taylor pointed to the empty seat next to Lukas.

“Of course not.” Lukas stood to let him in. Taylor sat and reclined his seat. “I changed my mind. I’ll let the kids do the first leg, then I’ll replace one of them, and we rotate like that.”

Lukas saw that his mom and her friends were already starting to doze off, no doubt tired from the frenetic day. “Why don’t you sleep with me?” Taylor said, and then caught himself. “I mean not with me but next to me—you know what I mean. You make me all tongue-tied, Dr. Halloran.”

“Sure, I could use a nap. I’m relieved we’re finally on our way.” Lukas reclined his seat to the same angle as Taylor’s. The cabin was mostly dark, except for the LED accent lights that glowed a cool blue.

Taylor reached out and touched Lukas’ hand. “Is this okay?” He then intertwined his fingers with Lukas’. “This is better than okay. Sleep tight.” Lukas raised their joined hands and kissed the back of Taylor’s. Pretty soon, their hands were on each other’s thighs.

Heat rose from Taylor’s athletic legs.

Despite the sadness, stress, and emotion of this week, Lukas appreciated the kind soul sleeping next to him. As he was resting, Lukas suddenly felt a rush of panic. What am I doing? Random memories of Drew raced through his head as he tried to calm himself. He tried to rationalize his thoughts. Yes, I just met this guy. Yes, I promised myself I’d never get hurt again. But he’s such a nice man. What if he’s psycho? He pulled his hand away from Taylor and eventually calmed his mind and drifted off to sleep. When Lukas woke up, he noticed his mother sitting with her eyes open, staring at nothing, either deep in thought or terrified of something. Lukas walked over to her. “Ma, are you doing okay?”

“I think I’m okay. I just have a lot on my mind.”

“I know. This has got to be tough for you...” “Honey, I’m not talking about your father. Of course, I’m concerned about him, but it’s only a matter of time until we can see him, hopefully.”

Pursuit of Innocence by Bethany Rosa Virtual Book Tour

What are four things you can’t live without?

The Kindle app on my phone. My Tesla. It's not to save the world, folks; I just like to go fast. My house in Arizona. It’s my happy place with cactus and sunshine. Well, that leads me right to my fourth: sunshine. I feel like I was supposed to say my husband, which is also true, so give me a fifth, and we’ll call it good.

What is your favorite television show?

It’s a tie between Schitt’s Creek and Ted Lasso. They make me laugh and cry in a single episode. Two things I don’t do very often, which sounds terrible, but I’m just not a very animated person. It’s all in there somewhere, though. I think.

If you could be any character, from any literary work, who would you choose to be? Why?

Any character that meets a prince and falls in love with a happily ever after. Because who wouldn’t?

What have you got coming soon for us to look out for?

The Pursuit of Innocence audiobook will come out sometime in May. Book two in The Pursuit Series, Dangerous Pursuit, will be released by the end of the year.

What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

Soooo many. 50 Shades of Gray was a huge influence. I think it was one of the first books that got people talking out loud about a genre that was previously kept silent. It also stuck to the romance formula so well. I love authors Rina Kent and Katee Robert, who go out of the box, stay there, and make it big. Their books are some of my all-time favorites. I love TL Swan, Vi Keeland, and Ana Huang. I could go on forever. There are just too many to name. There are days I ask myself why I’m writing when all I want to do is read…

“I’m done waiting around. You’re mine. No more games or pining over someone else when it’s me you want. You won’t remember his name after I get through with you.”

Lily knows exactly what she wants in life. To graduate, land a high-paying job, and forge her own way. Nothing will distract her. Until the ultimate playboy, billionaire Sebastian Dubree, barges in. Not to be overlooked, Lily’s longtime crush, Jackson, decides she’s worth the fight.

Reluctant to succumb to either, she quickly becomes a challenge to conquer.

Lily must decide between the familiarity of her childhood longing or the newly discovered  passion ignited by the dominant CEO. But can she surrender without losing herself in the process, or will someone take matters into his own hands?

Boundaries blur between desire and resistance in this gripping coming-of-age romance, leaving readers yearning for more.

I hit a wall. A solid, warm wall that smells dreadfully sinful. Before I have time to process, two firm hands are on my shoulders to steady me. “Hey, watch where you’re going” comes the deepest, sexiest voice imaginable, which would be incredibly hot if the words spoken were anything other than rude and demanding. Looking up, which is crazy, considering I’m one step higher, I freeze as my eyes land on a dark, handsome god of a man who looks like he wants to commit murder. What is it with me and jerks tonight?

His eyes get bigger, and his brows furrow as soon as my shocked gaze meets his. He has short black hair that’s longer on the top and styled perfectly. His menacing eyebrows are folded downward from scowling at me. The dark scruff that shadows his face is so sexy, trimmed razor straight, accentuating his perfectly chiseled jaw. Mentally slapping myself, I apologize.

“Crap, I’m so sorry. I didn’t see you there.” He doesn’t release his hold.

“That’s because your head was down. Your eyes should be looking forward.” His voice is hard and demanding.

Flustered and—I reluctantly admit—slightly turned on by his strong, firm grip and penetrating stare, I stand there frozen in place. After what seems like minutes but I’m sure is only seconds, I snap out of it and apologize again. “Sorry, I’ll watch where I’m going from now on.” The words rush out as I pull away to leave, this time keeping my head up. I think I hear him say something else behind me, but I don’t stop. Running into one of the hottest guys I’ve seen in a while should’ve been the highlight of my night. Instead, I’m more irritated. Do all good-looking men have a license to be an ass?

NBTM Virtual Tour: Our Lives in Between by Billie Kowalewski

OUR LIVES IN BETWEEN

by Billie Kowalewski

Do you ever wish you were someone else? Who?

Not really. I love being me.

What did you do on your last birthday?

Published Our Lives In Between and then I had a big party to celebrate it. A band played and there was a ton of food and cake of course. It was a blast! I danced the whole night.

What part of the writing process do you dread?

The synopsis. I hate writing those. Trying to sum up your whole book in this enticing way is next to impossible. Or so it feels. Writers get through it. But not without a lot of whining and crying, and probably a bunch of profanities. No, wait, that’s all me.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

I do occasionally suffer from writer’s block. Sometimes, I like to cook really detailed recipes. Concentrating on something like that often helps me figure out what I need too. Other times, I drive. Sometimes it’s the school bus. Sometimes, it’s my own car. Whatever the case, the faster I am moving the better my mind can focus.

Tell us about your latest release.

“Our Lives In between” is a soul mate love story that is set in the afterlife.

A barrier put in place at birth is what keeps us from remembering the world we came from. Harmony has discovered a way around it. Harmony believes that if she concentrates hard enough before she goes to Earth, she can manifest anything she wants in her life on Earth. Sadly, her classmates do not believe this is possible. So, one of her classmates named Kaleb offers to help test her theory by trying to find each other once they are on Earth. She accepts the challenge. Problems soon arise though, because each time they attempt this and they find each other on Earth they end up killing each other, ending their lives earlier than planned. Consequences can arise from dying early, they lose progress points and a soul's consciousness can be lost forever.

My world is your world—only you can’t remember any of it. A barrier exists between what you think is real and what you know to be. It had been put in place during the transition into the world you currently know and will be removed upon your return.

In other words, this is not your real life.

My name is Harmony, and I am going to let you in on a little secret. I am a student at the biggest, most famous school ever known. And so are you! It’s called Earth.

Yep. Earth is a school. Are you shocked? If you are, it’s okay. That is the most common and expected reaction to this news. I will give you a moment to let that sink in…

Just kidding! Based on the fact you’ve chosen to read this; I am going to bet that you’re a lot like me. You’re probably fine, and not shocked by this at all. If you do, however, find this news to be at all surprising, perhaps it would be best if you stopped here. This story may not be for everyone, and I am not looking to upset anyone’s beliefs. Our extreme diversity is an important part of what makes us who we are. So, this may be where we will agree to disagree and possibly part ways. Hopefully as friends.

For everyone else, I will move on.

Yes, life is about learning, and Earth is our school. I’m sure you have heard someone on Earth say this before. I know when I am there, I hear this often. Some people know, but it’s not because they remember it is. They know because people cannot get through a single day there without learning something, somehow. On Earth, learning is unavoidable.

Billie Kowalewski grew up in a small town along the Connecticut shoreline. She’s always had a wild imagination and spent her childhood dreaming up stories. This would often lead her to the library or whatever bookstore where she would be combing the shelves for books that closely resembled what was in her head at the time. A lot of the time she would come close and would be satisfied with what she found. However, there was always this one story she could never find. It was in 2010 that she decided to write it herself. In whatever spare time she has left, she enjoys listening to pretty much anything that rocks, like 80's hair bands, metal, etc. She also has a gift for finding the strangest movies and shows ever (according to her children) and loves spending time with her family.

Aestrangel the Fallen by Maria DeVivo Virtual Book Tour

Bewitching Book Tours Interview

What inspired you to become an author?

I don’t think it was any one specific thing, but more like a string of events that shaped my life. My dad was first and foremost the initial source of my inspiration. He read to me constantly as a kid, and eventually reading turned into him creating his own stories. It totally blew my mind. I wanted to emulate what my dad did, and wanted to be a master story-teller like him.

How did you come up with the title for your latest book?

Aestrangel came to me in a dream. I literally saw the letters form in my mind right before I woke up. A-e-s-t-r-a-n-g-e-l. It was so strange, yet made so much sense. I don’t remember the dream, but when I woke up, I wrote the word, and a poem just kind of flowed right after. That poem eventually became the basis for the entire story.

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

Aestrangel was the outlier, of course, because I usually start with a concept. A general idea with a basic premise and some characters to play their parts. From there, I come up with the title. Then once the title takes root in my mind, the story kind of fleshes itself out.

Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?

I always throw my personal experiences into the mix. I think it adds to the realism of the story, even if it’s magical or in a fantasy setting. There’s a lot of “me” in my pages, if that makes sense. And while I often embellish on those experiences, there’s always an underlying hint of reality.

Is there a genre(s) that you’d like to write that you haven’t tackled yet?

Not necessarily genre, but structure. I’ve never written a graphic novel before, and I think I’m ready to dip my toes. I have a story that’s been brewing in my head for a little while now that would lend itself to the comic form. I’m not an illustrator, and the process of graphic novel scripts is so different from long-form novels, but I think I’m up for the challenge.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

Aestrangel the Fallen is book one in the Aestrangel Trinity. Book 2, Aestrangel the Chosen sees the characters thrust in more morally ambiguous situations. The last book, Aestrangel the Risen, is due out sometime this summer. The third book really goes off the rails in terms of concept and content. But there are no surprises here. I literally tell you the ending in the Prologue of Aestrangel the Fallen. This series is the quintessential villain cycle.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

I have a crush on Kenny Rogers. Yes. The country singer Kenny Rogers. But the pre-plastic surgery, robust, younger, Kenny Rogers. Circa “Islands in the Stream” Kenny Rogers. He was hunky.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

This year, I have plans for four releases: Aestrangel the Risen in the summer, two in my Dawn of the Blood Witch Saga, and the re-release of my very first novel, The Coal Elf. I’m currently writing Book 6 in the witches, re-editing books 2 and 3 in The Coal Elf books, and in the planning stages of my comic. I’m doing all this while hitting the convention circuit for appearances and book signings and meeting readers and writers in this crazy, amazing community! 2024 is definitely shaping up to be jam-packed!

Excerpt

From Chapter One: Learning the Ways

They tell me I should be dreaming by now, that the images and scenarios should be well-embedded into my brand-new subconsciousness, but for me, all there has been is color. No. That’s not right. When I close my brand-new eyes, all that consumes me are the shifting shades of grays and blacks, and I’m not sure if this is something I should be worried about or not. I’ve been in this human simulation environment for quite some time now, and I’m guessing that part of my “humanness” hasn’t kicked in yet. But I’ve heard the others talking and describing their dreams, and I’m getting anxious for my first one. Revalia, the closest thing I have to what humans call a “best friend,” has told me the fabulous tales of her dreams. She says sometimes she doesn’t even want to wake up. She says the images and sounds and smells are so overpowering, so overwhelming, that when she wakes up, she desperately longs to go back to that dreamy, lazy place between the conscious and unconscious mind. I wish I knew what she was talking about.

I know my lack of dreams worries Camael. He has told me many times the human experience is multi-pronged and multi-faceted, and in order for me to complete my calling, I must be immersed in the most basic of human functions. There’s no other way for me to complete my mission because there’s no other way for me to be a “believable” Guardian to the human I am assigned. And if I don’t complete my mission successfully, I will never move up the ranks and become a Guardian Angel. Camael is in a higher order of angels than I am—the Dominions. He’s my mentor, and it’s his job to prepare me for the journey that I’m about to embark upon.

Yes, I’m an angel—we all are: Camael, Revalia, the others, and me. But, my rank right now is that of angel—the lowest rung on the ladder. My goal is to move up to Guardian, and hopefully beyond. It’s the natural progression for my kind, and I’m excited to serve the Creator (or God, as the humans refer to Him) and all of His glorious wonders.

There is no time—not the way humans divide time up at least. I’ve always existed, yet there are others and elders who were here in Ilarium before I was created, and since I’ve been given the ability to communicate in human language, it seems hard for me to put into words all the thoughts and feelings that I had before. Before, there was just love and peace and a willingness to serve and please, but now there is an actual lexicon, a vocabulary of tens of thousands of words, that I’m still trying to figure out how to effectively communicate and verbalize what’s in my heart. Never having had a heart before, it takes some getting used to.
We angels who are preparing for our callings have been thrust into a human-like world in order to become accustomed to the actual life of a human. The Powers That Be have replicated the physical world and have created buildings and structures for us, given us languages, infused us with feelings, and given us body shapes all in preparation for our descent to Earth.

While angels are neither male nor female, I have the body of a woman now, and I will be assigned female attributes from here forward. I rather do like the contour of the female form, I always have, and perhaps my partiality towards women is what prompted the Creator to put me in a woman’s body. My wings are more defined too; they are heavy on my shoulders with the feathered tips almost irritating the backs of my arms and legs. As the human notion of time becomes more ingrained into our routine, the weight of my wings becomes more and more cumbersome. Camael has said that the awareness of our wings was important so when we lose them on our descent, the shock wouldn’t be so bad. I don’t know; I’m still trying to understand all my teachings. Like how we’re going to be given a set of human memories specific to us and our assignment, yet have all the knowledge of our angelic lives. The thought of blending the two perplexes me.

This leads me to right now. This time. This place. The unfamiliarity of it all. Camael says this is a school, and the human I am assigned to help goes to one. I know this. I’ve seen them, the humans. I’ve watched them from up high, but actually being in a school—the four white walls and chairs called desks filed in rows with children sitting at them—is quite an adjustment. I sit in the front of a single aisle. We’re in alphabetical order, and I’m Aestra, so that means I’m first in the row. Revalia is a few desks behind me. I turn my head to try to catch her attention, but she’s staring out the window, deep in what Camael calls a “daydream.” I look at her a few seconds longer hoping my gaze can break her trance, but she’s too far gone, mesmerized in her human thoughts. The one disadvantage to being in this human shape is we angels can no longer feel the thoughts and emotions of others without speaking them. If I had been free from this woman body, I would have been able to read Revalia’s mind, but then again, if we weren’t in these human forms, Revalia wouldn’t be having such thoughts as hypnotizing daydreams…
