The Rogue's Ring Tour and Giveaway

The Rogue's Ring

A Treasure Tale Novel #3

by Nancy Lee Badger

Genre: Historical Romance

Heading out on his horse, Ghost, into the snowy Highlands of Scotland in January 1817 was not sane, but Bryce Ketteridge would never let down his friends. If a duke, an earl, and a former spy felt finding the owners of nobleman’s rings was important, he would do his share. Coming across masked bandits, and shooting one, turned his life on end. What follows was not in his plans.

The last thing Cat Douglas wished to do was steal coins from the handsome stranger she meets at a tavern. When he later shoots her while she threatened a nobleman’s coach, she suspected he had no idea it was her. Kidnapped boys, pirate threats, and murder propel them to save a boy named Blake. He was, after all, special to them both.

Once Bryce had peeled the frozen coat from his body, he headed up the ladder. The blankets were reasonably clean. Heat enveloped him within minutes of having nestled beneath them.

“A short nap is all I need.” His voice echoed amid the rafters. The outside rush of wind and pitter-patter of sleet accentuated the weariness evident in his voice. The cold that had washed over him as he and Ghost rode the trail disappeared. Having only a few blankets for warmth saddened him.

What I’d give for a lass to share my bed…

A dream about Cat and her luscious lips disappeared when he awoke in the dark. No sounds emanated from the roof, meaning the sleet had abated. The darkness concerned him, though. He had overslept, which might be the lingering result of the sleeping draught Cat had given him.

He hated to head out in the dark, but the better weather meant he might get out of the area and closer to Inverness sooner. Climbing down from the loft, Ghost snorted his disapproval at being ignored and alone for so long. Turning his head, he neighed so loud a barn owl flew from the rafters and out a broken window.

“Now, do not be upset. You hated having sleet coat your head as much as I. Here.”

The beast gulped down the fresh water and a handful of oats Bryce offered him.

“We need to go, my friend.”

The farmer appeared before Bryce could lead Ghost from the barn. “Leaving this late, my lord? My wife sent ye some food and wine.”

“My thanks to you and your wife. I overslept, so must be on my way.” He grabbed the sliced loaf of bread stuffed with a hunk of ham and cheese. He ignored the wine.

“Which way toward Inverness? The road closest to the sea was blocked by downed trees.”

“The main road be that a way, my lord. With the clouds gone, the moon should light yer way, good enough.”

Mounting atop Ghost, he tipped his cap and rode away, eager to leave the area in his wake. As they trotted along and Bryce chewed his food, he thought back to the lass he had loved years earlier. She lived on a similar farm in the same area, and had welcomed him into her heart and into her bed.

Chapter One

Niclas

“Happy birthday to me.” Niclas came up out of the middle of the River Wylve, eyeing the muddy coins in his hand. He shifted his waterproof metal detector under his other arm. “Well, aren’t you pretty specimens?”

“Oi. Professor Dirt. Swim this way. I’ve brought cake.” His brother whistled sharply from the riverbank. “C’mon, Nic, I’d wager you forgot lunch.”

“I didn’t.” Niclas glowered at his older brother, Izan. “I had breakfast. Who are you wagering with? It’s just you.”

“Ready Brek dosed with more sugar than is healthy doesn’t count as a meal.” Izan grinned at him while Niclas grumbled under his breath. “Stop cursing at me in ye olde English. You could just use ‘fuck.’ The world won’t end if you do.”

“I enjoy using old words. It’s fun. ‘Sard’ basically means ‘fuck’ anyway.” Niclas collected interesting curses almost as much as he did ancient artefacts. “Etymology is fascinating.”

“And people think you’re talking about sardines or something.” Izan dodged the spray of water Niclas sent at him. “Are you coming or not? I can hear your stomach grumbling from over here.”

“No, you can’t.”

The Ruiz brothers were polar opposites in many aspects despite being almost identical in looks. They were often teased for being twins born ten years apart. Both had dark brown eyes and hair. Izan kept his close-cut, while Niclas had a shaggy, longish mane of wavy curls.

The differences only expanded from there. Niclas was a twenty-eight-year-old autistic man. His hands were scarred from years of working on archaeological digs for the British Museum, though in all honesty, he blamed his own clumsiness for most of his healed injuries. His entire life revolved around archiving treasures and hunting for them in his spare time.

Izan had served in the military—and hadn’t struggled with anything other than a drive to push himself harder and farther than anyone else around him. He stood both taller and a little broader than his younger brother. Protective by nature, he tended toward an organised and regimented life, not something Niclas found interesting or comfortable.

For Niclas, a lot of life had been a struggle. He’d worked harder to keep up when others found things easy. It was sometimes exhausting.

Things in general often came easily to Izan. On the other hand, Niclas stumbled his way into success and failure in equal measure, often with a bruise or two to show for his effort. Spatial awareness had always been an issue for him—thanks to being autistic—something his elder brother didn’t struggle with at all.

Izan had dated his way through quite a few men and women over the years. Niclas had been hesitant to enter relationships. His asexuality tended to be a barrier for some.

The brothers adored one another. Izan had always looked out for him, which Niclas found both endearing and frustrating. He knew his brother meant well.

“Still planning your extended walk around the Cornish beaches over June and July? Have you thought about bringing a friend with you?” Izan offered him one of the small cakes he’d brought. “Eat, eat.”

“I’ll be fine.” Niclas had endured this argument twice already. “I’ve planned everything out quite carefully.”

“Fine? Fine. Fine, he says.” Izan wiped the crumbs from his shirt with precise meticulousness. “Last trip, you almost drowned, and you broke two toes. The one before? You got lost for three days. Three days.”

“I wasn’t lost. Just… took longer than expected to locate where I’d parked my Mini Cooper.” Niclas crossed his arms and glared at his brother. “I got there eventually.”

“Three whole days?” Izan raised an eyebrow at him. “You found it when a team came to rescue you.”

Dahlia Donovan wrote her first romance series after a crazy dream about shifters and damsels in distress. She prefers irreverent humour and unconventional characters. An autistic and occasional hermit, her life wouldn’t be complete without her husband and her massive collection of books and video games.

EXCERPT:

Hidden Justice

In this excerpt our main character, Justice Parish, has been informed via email that the mission she’s worked on for years is being delayed for another two years. Furious, she charges into the Spy Makers Guild office to confront the boss of The Guild––her adopted mother, Mukta Parish.

Justice

Head full of steam, I march through the Parish empire’s headquarters in Philadelphia blowing past sharp corridors, glass walls, and attractive businesspeople in power suits.

I won’t let Momma put my mission on hold. I don’t care about a few complications. This is our best chance to take down a global trafficking ring. We find a way.

I near Momma’s office and her executive assistant—straitlaced Lorena of the cotton button-downs and starched pantsuits—blocks my path to the closed mahogany doors. She crosses her arms. “She’s busy.”

Huh. A human barricade.

Good thing I’ve been trained for such an event.

I run straight at her. She cries out for me to stop and holds her ground. Kind of what I wanted. Veering left, I lift my booted foot, plant the arch against the edge of Lorena’s desk, toe into a leap, and vault over her. She ducks and cries out. Instant classic.

I land with a thud. “Thanks, Lorena,” I say, pulling open the office door. She’s still sputtering vague threats as I close the door with a click.

The satisfied grin slips from my face.

Momma isn’t alone.

The man—built like a hot night of unforgettable, wild blond hair like a sandstorm, eyes the color of the ocean after a lazy day in the sun, and beach-bronzed skin—drives the air from my lungs.

Come on, give a lady a warning. I’m used to finding stodgy business-type people in Momma’s office.

Everyone, including blondie, is staring at me, expecting me to say or do something. Like a deer caught in beautiful blinding blue headlights, I stare at the man.

I’m usually more successful at hiding my feelings, trained in it and all. But this high-pressure situation—Jack-be-nimbling Lorena, barging into a business meeting, and finding this perfect hot stranger—has me off my game.

Sandesh

Hearing the administrative assistant’s loud objection and the thud of something I can’t puzzle out I go from corner-office mode to time-to-take-someone-down mode.

A woman burst through the doors.

First thought: I hope I do have to take her down because that body underneath me would make my day. Second thought: Sucks to be wearing a damn monkey suit. Third thought as her eyes sweep my body: There are no thoughts.

Her mischievous dark gaze and the fan and flutter of those thick eyelashes swallow every decent thought from my mind, replacing them with open desire.

Broken Promises

In this excerpt, Fee’s long lost love has returned home for her mother’s funeral. She’s in an emotionally difficult place—blaming herself for her mother’s death. Brooks is trying to comfort her, rescue her from her own harsh criticism.

Fee felt the warmth of Brooks’ hand reaching toward her, as if to coax her head up, but he didn’t touch her. She lifted her chin.

A knuckle of skin was pinched between his creased brows. “Why are you so hard on yourself?”

She was being hard on herself? “I’m being honest.” He should try being in her head for two seconds. “You can try it. I won’t break. Trust me, you can tell me whatever you think about me.”

She kept her eyes pinned to him, open, inviting, and waiting. Drawing in a deep breath, he reached forward, swept his finger lightly across her forehead, down her cheek.

His touch, electric and warm, sizzled through her with breathtaking speed. His pupils dilated. “Querida, you are a song that my heart never stopped singing. And when I’m with you, the music is everywhere.”

The rich tone of his voice caressed her senses. Warm delight prickled her skin. She’d meant mean stuff. Kind stuff… well, she had no defense for that. But she would not cry. Not in front of him. But maybe something else…

Tiptoeing, she did something that, an hour ago, would’ve seemed unforgivable.

She lifted her face to his and kissed him.

She’d intended to catch and release, but the second she met his smooth, full lips the need that had been burning in her for eight long years erupted. She fisted his shirt, pushed her tongue boldly through his wet lips and into his warm mouth.

A surprised pause was followed by him gently tugging her hands from his shirt.

She let go, put her arms around his neck, and held him in place. So good. So Brooks. So long denied.

The hot heavy length of desire unfurled inside her and she disappeared into that need.

With a groan, he wrapped his arms around her and dragged her closer.

Their low sighs and grinding bodies left no doubt what would happen next if they kept it up. Maybe that’s what she wanted. Maybe, forgetting this way would be best.

He pulled back. “Fee…” Catching his breath, he disentangled her arms from his neck. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have… I’m sort of seeing someone.”

Oh, my God. She snatched her hands from inside his. Of course, he was. He was a beautiful man. Kind and… beautiful and… Oh, my God.

She covered her hot cheeks with her hands. Why hadn’t she asked? Why had she just assumed it was okay to kiss him? “No. I’m sorry. I…”

His eyes filled with regret and maybe pity. Two things she frantically didn’t want to see. She didn’t know where to look. She snatched the coat he still held in his hand. “Let’s go.”

She raced down the hall into the foyer, head spinning.

Brooks caught up to her and grasped her arm. “Fee. Wait. Please.”

She pulled away. Held up her hand. Shook her head. That motion, along with the overwhelming scent of rose and lily condolence flowers, flipped her stomach. “I can’t, Brooks. Whatever it is you need to say about that kiss, about the woman you’re dating, about us….” She willed her voice not to break. “Not today. Let just go. Okay?”

✱✱Audio Book Review✱✱ Until I Get You by Claire Contreras

Until I Get You
By: Claire Contreras
Narrated by: Joe Arden & Kasha Kensington

My reputation at Fairview University preceded me. I was the projected number-one pick in the NHL draft and the fan favorite at the rink. People wanted to be me or be with me.

Except for Lyla James Marichal.

She didn't look at me like I was her next meal. She eyed me with disdain.

Instead of vying for my attention, she ignored me and pushed me away.

She was completely unattainable, and I became obsessed with her.

When I finally got her, it felt like I was on top of the world. I was going to help the team win another championship, going into the draft, and had Lyla by my side.

And then, without warning, she left me.

Vanished.

It took me three bitter, angry, long years to find her, but I did, and now she owes me a lot more than just an explanation.

Three years ago, she ruined my life.

Now, I was going to become her worst nightmare.

Tropes: hockey romance, new adult, obsessed/possessive hero, boy falls first, #JP hero, dark themes (content warning in the book)

Momma Says: 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐

If I had to sum up Until I Get You in just one word, it would have to be intense because everything about this one has an intensity about it. From the tone to the characters to the storyline, it's intense. I would strongly suggest heeding the content warnings included in the book because things do get dark. There is a bit of suspense that follows the characters from the beginning, and it had me hooked and hanging on every word waiting for the reveal. Part of that includes a couple of scenes that were pretty hard to hear - I did listen to this one, and to be honest, I'm not really sure which format would've been harder to get through on those parts. I can usually imagine it so much darker than it comes across in audio, but Kasha Kensington pulls out all the stops. The emotion of those scenes comes through in her voice and tone, and she had my heart pounding.
Even the romance has that intensity about it. Lachlan's feelings for Lyla are right there on the line of obsession, and I'd even go so far as to say he crossed that line a few times. At the same time, I couldn't stop rooting for this couple. Without giving too much away, I'll explain it by referencing the cover. That smoke you see on the cover is perfect for this relationship because where there's smoke, there's fire, and Lyla and Lachlan are hot enough to set the curtains on fire!
Kasha Kensington is joined by Joe Arden, who wowed me as he always does. This was my first time listening to Kensington, and after hearing the whole thing, I can't imagine anyone else as Lyla. Of course, Joe Arden's sexy voice was perfect for Lachlan, and he perfectly captured that intensity I've been talking about. I'll stop there before I give away the book's secrets, and there are a fair few to discover. So, to sum it up, the combination of Claire Contreras's writing and Joe Arden and Kasha Kensington's narration is a thing of beauty. Somehow Contreras has escaped my notice until this book, but I plan to remedy that immediately. Until then, I highly recommend Until I Get You for readers of dark romance.

When I was a child, all I wanted was a family. I wanted to be part of something. Something that made me feel like I belonged. My parents died when I was a baby, or so I thought.

My early life was in the foster system. One of my first memories was Grace taking me in as her foster with the intention of adopting me. She was single with a sister who always found trouble.

Grace was my family for the longest time. Then my uncle, Edward, found me. He took me back to England where he schooled me with private tutors on his estate in Somerset. They taught me languages—Hebrew, Greek, Latin. They drilled me in bible studies. Edward was relentless in his pursuit of my education. I was bored and dreamed of nothing more than running away. I didn’t feel like I belonged there. I was never welcomed with open arms by the rest of the family.

It led me to my romantic fling with one of the stable hands. My uncle sent him away. Furious with him, I returned to the States to make my own way. I put myself through college, met Ben, moved in with him, and tried to live happily ever after.

But something was always missing. There was always that hole in the middle of my heart that remained unfilled. Hollow. Lonely.

Until I met Kincade.

Until I was contacted by Azriel, the fallen angel, and Joachim, the messenger angel.

Until I reconciled with my estranged uncle.

Until I met Darius and Ophelia, Killian, and Astrid.

Until I was reunited with my biological mother.

Until I discovered the true identity of my father.

When all that happened, my life drastically changed.

I ruminated on all of this as I stood on the battlefield, gazing at the horde of minions, demons, and high lords led by Lucifer before me. Wind whipped through my black hair. I cursed myself for not thinking to pull it up into my signature high ponytail.

My friends flanked me on either side, wielding their weapons of choice. Behind me, an army of seraphim, warrior angels, the Order of the Holy Relics, and a ragtag Fae army ready to fight and die.

For me.

For all that was good in this world.

For all mankind.

I held my uncle’s flaming sword, ready to do battle. All of us were ready to do battle.

I prepared for this day for months.

Today, I would face my destiny.

Today, I would do what I was born to do.

Today, I would fight for all mankind.
