Matthew raised his hand to indicate he wanted a beer, even though he wasn’t sure if he’d drink it or not. The bartender slid a frosty bottle in front of him. Finally. “Maybe I thought that made you safe. Since you have a date and all.”

“Oh, no, you’re wrong about that. It makes me more dangerous.” Gwin stared into his eyes, daring him to continue the flirting. It was anything but harmless.

He remembered that other face. A goth-looking chick.

With fangs.

He had to get out of there. He looked away, trying to block it all. It had been nothing. His drunken imagination. That was all. “Well, enjoy the show.” He headed back to the stage, trying to seem like he wasn’t hurrying. He’d drank a few swallows of beer. He didn’t want to drink too much, but he was more afraid of her than falling back into alcohol.

He gave the cues to start the second set. He knew John was staring at him. He could feel it burning into the back of his head, but he wasn’t going to address it. Not now and maybe not ever.

About the Author

The Author is a full-time triple board-certified physician who started writing dramatic medical romances after 20 years in the trenches of health care. She's done it all from candy striper (needed a wheelchair driver's license) to nursing home aid (mastered wheelchair driving) to hospital barber for neurosurgery (they rated her skills as subpar.). She promises she never had sex in a call room - the mattresses are not comfortable - or had a fistfight with a patient - though she did work as a fight doc at the Octagon. Her stories are sexy, snarky, and real with all the romance and drama of the lives of our first responders.

She writes the MetroGeneral Downtown series that tackles the personal and professional challenges facing our front-line providers. Her stories have the drama of Grey's Anatomy, the comedy of Scrubs, the sexiness of Outlander, and the medical details of Forensic Files. They feature fast, witty dialogue, strong women with goals, and quirky ensemble casts because the hospital is full of smart weirdos who are willing to save your life.

When not working or writing, she is a brown belt in judo, an avid reader, and an attending surgeon in stuffed animal veterinary medicine for her six kids. (No one trusts her husband's medical skills because he's just a lawyer.) You can follow her at carinaalyce.com

But when Kate finds a love letter to Brian from “Micky,” she’s torn between proving Brian’s innocence and nailing him to the wall with his guilt.

Seeking comfort and guidance, Kate turns to the one constant in her life: her animals. No surprise since Kate’s a champion for throwaways—discarded dogs and cats, abandoned horses bound for slaughter, and all creatures great and small. But she never imagined she would become a throwaway herself.

Synopsis

The nerd, the coach, and the hookup…

Asher-

Swipe left, swipe left, swipe left. Sure, the idea of a quick, no-strings intimate rendezvous via hookup app sounds oddly thrilling, but it’s simply not me. Or maybe it is me, because it happened…and I liked it. Until I realized he looked familiar for a reason. A bad reason. Now I’ve made a faux pas with the sexiest man on planet Earth, and my internal karma system requires me to fix it. Help!

Blake-

I may seem like I have it together, but the truth is, I’m a hot mess. I’m so deep in the closet that I can’t remember my real name some days. That’s okay. The benefit of one-night stands is anonymity. Until Asher. Not a total surprise. I’ve always had a thing for geeks, but I’ve never met anyone like him. He’s a pint-sized dynamo on a quest for perfection who can help me come out…if I follow his script.

Hmm. I’m in.

The Jock Script is an MM bisexual, geek/jock romance starring a bowtie wearing nerd, a sexy lacrosse coach, and a shenanigan inducing script!

Excerpt

Asher closed his mouth in a tight line and sighed. “We should change the topic. Every time I’m with you, I secure my spot in Hades.”

I threw my head back and laughed. “What’s with you and the guilty conscience? I admire your commitment to honesty, Ash, but I don’t think it’s healthy to punish yourself after the fact. Not to mention, your rules seem arbitrary. They don’t make sense.”

“Sure, they do.”

“Hmph. You say sex is a part of nature, and you’re happy to discuss it until your internal sex-o-meter overloads and you decide you’ve overstepped some invisible boundary. It’s like you want to punish yourself for no good reason.”

Asher opened and closed his mouth. “I don’t do that.”

I polished off my salad, pushed my plate aside, and reached for my wineglass. “Yeah, you do. You should give yourself a break once in a while.”

“Says the devil incarnate.”

“Who me?” I flashed a roguish grin. “I’m not so bad, and you don’t have to be so good. Is this the remnants of a super religious upbringing or—”

“Oh, gosh, no. My mother is a hippie. She’s not judgmental at all.”

“Then why—”

“I’m just weird, Blake.”

His tone was firm rather than sharp and sent a strong message that he’d prefer to drop the subject. In fact, he looked suspiciously eager to greet the waiter when he returned to clear our salad dishes and set dinner plates on the table. I observed his animated hand gestures, his starched collar, and perfectly straight bow tie, wondering what he was hiding under all that armor.

Asher wasn’t weird, he was—okay, fine…he was totally weird. But I had a feeling he was compensating too. Making up for something or glossing over an unseen flaw. Sort of like a kid standing guard over a lamp he’d busted by accident. No one would notice as long as he made sure the unblemished side was never shown.

Call me crazy, but that got me. Yes, I was very attracted to him and definitely wanted to get naked and horizontal with him ASAP. But I wanted to know him too. I wanted to peel away his protective layers and study his quirks. His internal system of checks and balances fascinated me.

I twirled my fork around my pasta and smiled. “You know, I’m no devil and anyone who sucks dick like you cannot be an angel. There’s got to be a good middle ground for us.”

“Yes. As friends.”

“Right,” I agreed, shifting in my seat to adjust my cock when he hummed around a mouthful of pasta. No joke, my dick woke up at the mention of alien sex and was now stretching the seam of my zipper. I sipped my wine and willed my body to get the “friend” memo. “So, buddy…since we’re supposed to be spending time together now, I think you should come to my game next weekend.”

“Game,” he repeated, drawing out the single syllable into two. “The one you coach? Or do you play also?”

“I play with a club team, but our season ended a couple of weeks ago. We’re on a break till summer, which is fine ’cause my kids have finals and my girls’ team is in the last stretch before CIFs.”

“I don’t understand that acronym, but I’ll come to your game and maybe afterward we can do power tool…things.”

“Sounds like a date. The game is at ten at Westgate. I’ll text you the address.”

“Okay. I have questions, like…where do I sit and what should I wear? Also, what are the rules?”

I smiled. “Sit wherever you want and wear whatever you want. The idea is to have fun. Well…and to kick OC Lutheran’s ass. As for the rules…the goal is to put the ball in the net more times than our opponent. You’ll be able to follow along.”

He didn’t look convinced. “I’ll do some research. Now, what about us? Do you want me to be there and not speak or…are you going to introduce me? And if so, what will you say? I need to rehearse my lines.”

“Lines? This isn’t a play, Ash. We’re friends.”

“No, we’re not. We hardly know each other.”

I frowned. “Then we need to fix that ’cause I’m going to introduce you as my friend. It’s less complicated that way.”

“And if someone asks where we met, I’m allowed to improvise, correct?” he teased. taking a big bite of pasta.

Too big of a bite. He slurped a rogue piece of tagliatelle with wide eyes, then covered his mouth with his napkin. It was pretty freaking cute. I pointed at the sauce on his cheek.

When he swiped at the wrong side, I hooked my finger and motioned for him to lean in. I wiped his cheek with my thumb, underestimating the intimacy of the gesture. The strong current of heat and desire sizzling between us threw me off guard, rendering me speechless.

Excerpt Tour: Stargazer by David Scott

Stargazer

by David Scott

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Autobiography
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

For thousands of years, stars have held our attention and imagination. They influence our life—we wish upon them, sing songs about them, navigate by them, write about them, follow them, and even give their name to the actors we love. My memories have revealed a lifetime of navigating by the stars, and moving beyond the fear and anxiety that self-doubt so insidiously cloaks us in. Yes, as Jiminy Cricket sang for us in Walt Disney's Pinocchio, "when you wish upon a star . . . fate steps in and sees you through."

Memories and influences have a profound effect on our lives. I look back on my childhood years—the 1940s to mid-'50s—and I can recall the people who were inspirational to me. Mostly it was my family, but there was also Jiminy Cricket. You no doubt recollect the song "When You Wish Upon a Star," with its lyrics that lift the spirit and let you believe anything is possible. I didn't doubt Jiminy for a minute.

The early years of my life were a time of innocence, security, adventure, and family love. How quickly my situation changed—one decision by my parents, made with my best interests foremost in their thoughts, shattered the world I had known. Through the fear, torment, isolation, and loss of my own identity, my memories and influences would come to have an overwhelming power on the choices I was to make.

My transition from teenager to adult seemed to happen overnight, but my unflappable outward appearance belied the struggles of a boy coming to terms with his guilt, and an irresistible need for his parents to be proud of him. My future was being shaped from the past, but it took me a long time to realise it. I chose the road less travelled, steeped in the wonder of the cinema and accompanied by my beloved animal companions, and it has been intriguing, daunting, rewarding, and, at times, solitary, but I always felt it was the path I was meant to take.

Like so many people, I let the emotions attached to memories hold me captive, and I missed opportunities to choose with more clarity. A near-death experience helped me to live a simpler life. Participating in a creative writing course inspired me to engage in script writing, stage work, and novel writing. This is my third book, an autobiography that has revealed more of me than I ever intended to share, and fate has led you to it.

EXCERPT (Exclusive Exerpt):

I met Bryane during my Sydney jaunts. The gay spots I was taken to were real eye-openers for a naïve country boy, but the fascination soon wore off after often finding myself a wallflower at venues, where I was totally out of place. The last time I visited I was determined to ask Bryane to live with me at Albury, but when I saw how he thrived with his friends at Sydney night spots I reneged on my plan and returned home without letting him know how I felt about him. A fortnight later he telephoned me out of the blue, saying he was catching the next train to Albury to live with me.

He arrived with a suitcase and Pekinese dog and settled in to working at the drive-in theatre. Our brief try at romance was unfulfilling for both of us but we remained good mates, bonded by past bad experiences. In a reverse reaction, his open gayness helped ease the pressure of guarding my sexuality and I was more accepting of myself . . . but not entirely. It was impossible to eradicate decades of hiding behind a rock so I continued to dart there, even though I was mainly fooling myself. Sharing a house while living separate lives worked for us. I never figured out what made him tick, but then there are times when I don’t understand myself. I guess in the long run the important thing is to care for the other person, especially when they are down, and at other times let them run their own race.

I taught Bryane to drive a car, and he was so elated at attaining his driver’s licence at his first attempt that he bounced in his seat on the way home and veered onto the wrong side of the road. I wrenched the steering wheel to bring the car back to the correct side of the road, wondering if I’d created a monster by teaching him to drive. Generally, he was an excellent driver with just a couple of mishaps. One was when he was collecting me from the Albury airport. Not realising the road sharply curved around the tarmac he drove the car nose-first into a table drain. Another of his feats was driving onto a footbridge crossing above railway tracks until becoming stuck on stairs. The way was so narrow that the doors couldn’t swing open, so a policemen had to drag him out the window. It was after a party he’d attended so he was well over the alcohol limit. After that I took him to where he wanted to go and left him to arrange a ride home with a friend.

Bryane loved horses, so with ten acres of the drive-in site not being utilised we fenced it into a horse paddock, having saved a thoroughbred gelding from the knackery (slaughter house). He was Bryane’s mount during the day, while at night the horse positioned himself by a fence facing the screen. Old Blue loved movies, especially family ones when, for a bit of comical body-weaving and head-bobbing, children were enticed into feeding him sweets and hot chips over the fence.
