✱✱Book Review✱✱ Here Comes The Son by Dahlia Donovan

Here Comes The Son
by Dahlia Donovan

When evil stirs in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, heroes come in both ordinary and extraordinary packages.

Ignatius Faber knows a few things for absolute certain. He’s half-demon, his father is the unequivocal prince of darkness, and demons want to destroy his city. And if he doesn’t make the first move on his crush, they’re never going to be anything more than a teenage fantasy that’s lasted into his thirties.

Lalo Pavia grew up hard and fast, orphaned at a young age. As an autistic, he’s learned to approach life cautiously. He throws his energy into gardening and photography—allowing both to provide a buffer between himself and the rest of the world.

Except for Iggy.

Can they find triumph, life, and even love in the middle of a city in flames?

Their fight for the mile high city has just begun.

Momma Says: 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐

Childhood friends, a first crush turned into more, battles with demons, and more junk food than you can shake a stick at all done Dahlia Donovan style. HERE COMES THE SON is a little different than what I would normally expect from this author with its supernatural elements and loads of action, but it still has that same draw-you-in storytelling that she does so well.
Iggy and Lalo are terrific characters, and I couldn't help but root for them as they tiptoed around a relationship or defining said relationship. The connection between this pair is obvious from the start, and I absolutely loved Iggy's understanding of Lalo's needs, and his determination to put those needs ahead of everything else. As the parent of an autistic child, I always appreciate Ms. Donovan's attention to detail with autistic characters, and Lalo is no different. Lalo certainly has his triggers to deal with and they all ring true. I found myself smiling quite often as I read and recognized so many similarities to things I see every day. Seeing Lalo and Iggy grow toward a lasting relationship was heartwarming and fun.
In addition to our romantic couple, we get a whole cast of quirky and fun characters to enjoy. From Father Sal with his blatant hints to Wendy and her lab, and even the devil himself, Lucifer, the secondary characters are just as interesting and fun as Iggy and Lalo. Even the demons, bad as they are, have their own personalities and quirks that help keep the story moving.
This intriguing take on demons and the devil is a thoroughly entertaining story from beginning to end. It's a wonderful mix of action and danger tempered with witty dialogue and silly situations. I really liked the way things wrapped up even though I was left with some questions that have me hoping to see these characters again.

✱✱Book Review✱✱ At War with a Broken Heart by Dahlia Donovan

At War with a Broken Heart
A May-to-December MMM Romance
by Dahlia Donovan

What's the perfect recipe for an emotional MMM romance?

One autistic coffee shop owner, one morose mug maker, and a mostly cheerful police detective.

Fie Morogh Russell goes off to war with a broken heart and returns with a shattered spirit. He hermits away in Bideford, Devon, making mugs, with his service dog, Haggard, for company. Post-traumatic stress turns every memory into a minefield, and life is dismal with one or two rare exceptions.

Davet Heuse drags his younger brother to Bideford for a new start. Both autistic, the two siblings have fought hard to enjoy freedom by the seaside. While Davet runs a coffee shop from his tiny house, his brother pursues his dream at university.

Detective Sidney Little has transitioned from military service to the police force easily. His unrequited crushes and his estranged father are the only points of frustration in his life. He hasn't quite figured out how to deal with either problem.

When a tragic accident brings Davet's world crashing down around him, can Fie and Sid help him through the pain of loss?

In this May-December romance with a twist, three men struggle through one obstacle after the other to somehow find themselves in love on the other side.

Momma Says: 5 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

All the feels and then some! Poly relationships in books can be tricky to pull off under the best of circumstances without having an odd man out--someone who doesn't quite fit or isn't a necessary part in the relationship. Despite that, Dahlia Donovan makes it look like a walk in the park, and she does it with style, giving us a three-man relationship with the May-December trope as an added bonus.

AT WAR WITH A BROKEN HEART is a relatively quick read, but there is a ton of story packed into its just over 200 pages. Each of our three main characters has his own story to tell, each different from the others, but they become wonderfully interwoven as Fie, Davet, and Sidney become more and more important to each other. The book is filled with emotional ups and downs, and the angst level is high, but we also get some terrific banter and well-timed moments of levity to lighten the load.

One of my favorite things about this author's books is the richness of the characters. While the focus is on Fie, Sid, and Davet, all the characters come to life. Love them or hate them, and we get a mix of both, they feel so real that they practically leap off the page, and they bring an emotional roller coaster with them. I felt Davet's anguish and grief, Fie's struggle with PTSD, and Sid's hurt over a family member's betrayal. To sum it up, I absolutely loved these guys, and when they hurt, I hurt. When they were done wrong, I got mad.

This story is about the building of a polyamorous relationship, but make no mistake, it's so much more than that. It's a story of friendship, family, love and loss, seeing the world a little different than most, and finding those missing puzzle pieces to make our life complete.

✱✱ Book Review ✱✱ Regret (Shattered Secrets Book 1) by Bella J.

Regret
Shattered Secrets Book 1
by Bella J.

When it comes to women, Hunter has rules.

Those rules ensure his life stays uncomplicated and controlled. Control is what he craves, what he needs to keep his inner demons quiet.

Private investigator by day, his life is nothing but a pit of regret, devoid of any and every emotion.

Hired to find an elusive runaway--a wild, hot-headed woman with sinfully enticing curves--Hunter's self-control is pushed to the limit. Scarlet challenges him in ways that make him wanting to break his own damn rules.

But she has secrets--secrets he's determined to uncover. He just didn't count on getting his own past dragged into what turns out to already be a deadly game of lies.

This is not a love story. This is not a tale of how love conquers all.

This is a story of how two people equally shattered by their pasts realize that two broken souls can't make a whole.

Momma Says: 4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Holy Moly! REGRET pulls out all the feels from the very beginning. I expected the story to be dark, but it's also incredibly intense from the heartbreaking prologue to the very last page.

I don't think Bella J has left an emotion out of this one and I was so thoroughly enmeshed in this story and the characters that I felt them all. I laughed, I cried, I got mad. Add in the moments of frustration, anxiety, sympathy, heartbreak, hope, as well as the loss of that hope, and this is one roller coaster ride of intense emotion.

Hunter and Scarlet have great chemistry, even when they're determined to hold each other at arm's length. They're both broken by past tragedies, and they've both put up walls to protect their hearts. Despite that, they're drawn together with an almost magnetic pull as Hunter attempts to protect Scarlet and keep her safe from the man who will do anything to find her. The extreme circumstances they find themselves in lead to intimacies that are crazy passionate and even brutal.

Scarlet and Hunter's story is not a conventional romance by any means, and things are far from resolved with the turning of that last page. In fact, we get a jaw-dropping, oh no, it can't stop there cliffhanger. The type that makes it almost impossible not to dive into the next book immediately.

There were a couple of twists in the story that I saw coming, but that didn't diminish my enjoyment in the least. Actually, one big reveal, in particular, kept me on the edge of my seat to see how it would come out and how this pair would react.

To sum it up, this is one hard to put down read that is dark, twisted, tragic, and thoroughly compelling.

✱✱ Book Review ✱✱ Hell Yeah!: PHATT Farm by Gem Sivad

Hell Yeah!: PHATT Farm
Kindle Worlds Novella
Smoke, Inc. Book 4
by Gem Sivad

FBI agent Mackenzie Sierra Scott grimly anticipates six weeks of mindless boredom as she and her dog travel to Phatt Farm. Not realizing the full extent of her aversion toward dieting, her handler has stashed her at an off-the-grid weight loss center. Until she testifies at the trial of a killer, she'll be in-hiding, one healthnut among many.

Upon meeting resident farmer, Eazy Phatt, Mack thinks of many ways they can burn calories together. And from his immediate attention, she knows he feels the attraction too. When Eazy invites her to help him with farm work as an alternative to a daily regime of yoga and pushups, she accepts, picturing hours of gratuitous sex.

Hot body aside, there's nothing easy about Eazy. Instead of becoming her lover, he turns Mack into a farmhand, keeping her busy driving tractor, stacking hay, picking apples, shucking corn, and somewhere along the way, falling in love. And that all happens before the shooting starts.

Momma Says: 3 stars⭐⭐⭐

PHATT FARM is a fast-paced, engaging read that is full of giggles and chemistry. Coming in at just over an hour's read time, it's perfect for a quick afternoon or bedtime tale.

Eazy is a sexy, ex-military man working on the family farm while he figures out his life and Mack is there hiding out from danger in her real life. There is instant attraction from their very first meeting, but Eazy does come off as a bit hot and cold at times. Mack and Eazy do fall in love quite fast, which wouldn't have bothered me if it weren't for Eazy's gruff attitude one minute and flirtations the next. There is reason for this, but I felt like we got more of that information from the blurb than in the story, although there is a twist toward the end that gives us even more insight into Eazy's actions. We also get some suspense stemming from Mack's job as a forensic accountant, but it's more of a side story once she gets to the farm.

Overall, the story is an entertaining read, loosely related to the author's Smoke, Inc world, which I've really enjoyed. I would've preferred a bit more development on the romance, but we still get some interesting characters and fun banter in an easy to read story.

✱✱ Book Review ✱✱ Rhythm by Gem Sivad

Rhythm
Smoke, Inc. Book 3
by Gem Sivad

When CEO, Marty Jones, needs a partner for a charity dance-a-thon, he hires a Marilyn Monroe look-alike from Maxine's Baby Doll Escort Service. All he hopes for is a warm body who can shuffle her feet.

Underneath all her quirks, serial job-hopper, Holly Smith is a tough, no nonsense, kind of woman. She doesn't date, has two friends, and concentrates most of her time and energy on restoring the old house she bought at auction.

But boy, can she shuffle her feet--dancing. When her best friend asks her for help, she agrees to play partner to a local CEO at a charity dance-a-thon.

What could go wrong?

https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B077VMG132

Momma Says: 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wow, just wow! This third Smoke, Inc tale is packed full of everything that I've enjoyed in the previous books, plus so much more. More funny, more steam, more emotion… More everything.

Marty and Holly's story is perfectly titled, considering their meeting on the dance floor and Marty's subsequent efforts to find a Rhythm in the relationship. I did have a bit of an eye-roll moment with their first encounter, mostly due to Holly's circumstances, but their chemistry is undeniable and this pair is nothing short of scorching hot together.

Holly is a bit of a loner and doesn't share many personal details with anyone, which leads to an amusing misunderstanding of who she is and some rather inappropriate comments from Marty. As he slowly inserts himself into Holly's life, the quirky bunch of Smoke, Inc begins to pull her into their world whether she likes it or not, and some of them are hilariously pushy about it.

Finally, we get to the suspense in this entertaining read. It's not a right in your face, here's a mystery type of thing. Instead, it sort of trickles into the story, sometimes in ways that seem completely innocuous until it all comes together. I'll admit that some of those little moments didn't appear to have much to do with the story at first and I did wonder why they were even included in the story, but it does all make sense in the end and makes for an interesting bit of suspense without getting overly angsty.

To sum it up, RHYTHM is an engaging read with some absolutely lovable characters and loads of laughs, plus a splash of danger. I've thoroughly enjoyed all the characters in the Smoke, Incstories, but Marty and Holly's romance is hands down, my favorite.

✱✱ Book Review ✱✱ Life Sucks After You Die by Crystal-Rain Love

Life Sucks After You Die
Twice Bitten Book 1
by Crystal-Rain Love

What do you get when you mix an incubus bite with a vampire bite?

A shitastrophe.

All I wanted to do was go to a bar and drown my sorrows in some alcohol, but I had to get attacked by an incubus. Now I'm being guarded by a hunky but oh so irritating vampire (who bit me too) while the incubus stalks me.
Being guarded by the sexy vampire probably wouldn't be that bad if not for the fact my perfect boss has finally noticed me. Try dating while a vampire guards you way too closely and an incubus tracks your every move, waiting to pounce.
Then there's some creepy hunter guy who also wants to kill me.
The sun wants to kill me.
Human food wants to kill me.
Don't even get me started on my family.

Life sucks after you die.

Momma Says: 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐

Snark, wit, a bit of romance, and plenty of action come together in this Urban Fantasy/Romantic Comedy and make for one entertaining read. The book is well-written and fast-paced, making it hard to put down as our heroine comes to grips with her fate while trying to live a normal life.

As far as heroines go, Danni is a bit of a mixed bag. She's full of snark and does speak her mind, especially with the sexy vampire, Rider. However, her self-esteem is almost non-existent. So much so that her inner musings are almost agonizing at times, but once we get the inside track on why she thinks so little of herself, it all makes sense. In this first book in the series, she's in the middle of everything and has an important decision to make regarding her fate, and all the while, she's infatuated with her boss and trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy. If that isn't enough, she also has to deal with attempts on her life and people who may not be all that they seem.

The only drawback for me is that we have more than one big bad in LIFE SUCKS AFTER YOU DIE and as a start to a series, I was surprised at how quickly things were tied up and secrets were revealed. As the first in a series, I would've expected at least a few loose ends and at least one of the major problems to be a continuing story. Considering the conclusion, I can't imagine where the story will go from here. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the read and look forward to more chuckle-worthy humor and edge of your seat action in the next book in the Twice Bitten series.
