✱✱Book Review✱✱ We Can Forever: A Small Town Romance by Lenna Phoenix

Michael Greer is a second-generation fire chief and a single dad of a precocious 11-year old, so there’s not much that scares him.

(Admittedly, more because of the second than the first.)

When Pine Island’s new craft shop owner accidentally backs into his car, he takes that in stride too. And does what any fire chief would do.

Invite her out on a date.

It doesn’t take long to figure out that Hannah Lewis is gorgeous, quirky, smart as hell, and...
hiding something.

Hannah has learned the hard way to keep the truth about her life as hush-hush as possible.

At best, people don’t understand. At worst, they call her lazy or a liar.

Better to just keep her secrets to herself and keep her distance from almost everybody.

But this tiny town’s sexy fire chief won’t seem to accept her attempt at solitude. He keeps showing up all patient and witty and a great dad. Everything Hannah has ever hoped for if she allowed herself to admit it.

He says he’s ready to fight her battles with her.

Will he still feel that way when he finds out the truth?

Ever read a book and almost from the beginning you just know it was written for you? Yeah, that is what We Can Forever was for me. I totally related to this story and to Hannah along with the rest of her chronic pain crafter's group. I've dealt with chronic pain for about 8 years now, and I understand those looks and little comments when you try to explain it. One of my favorite things about this romance is Michael's complete acceptance of Hannah's source of pain and her limitations because of it. Every woman should have a Michael in her life with his understanding and protective nature.
On the technical side, the book is well written and the characters and town feel real. Chronic pain sufferer or not, this is a well-done small-town romance and the beginning of a promising series. I'll certainly be watching for the next book!

✱✱Audio Book Review✱✱ Devil of Dublin by BB Easton

Devil of Dublin
By: BB Easton
Devil of Dublin, Book 1
Narrated by: Elizabeth Klett & Eric Nolan

From the Wall Street Journal best-selling author of 44 Chapters About 4 Men (inspiration for the Netflix Original series Sex/Life) comes a dark Mafia romance steeped in Irish folklore.

I can’t remember anymore if my grandfather’s eyes were blue or green, but I’ll never forget the way they wrinkled at the corners when he laughed at one of his own jokes. Or the way they sparkled with mischief when he told me tales about the magical creatures that dwelled in the forest behind his humble Irish sheep farm—shy fairies who liked to eat tea biscuits, cruel witches who liked to eat children, a moody lake spirit with a taste for expensive gifts.

As a child, I believed every fantastical word. But when he warned me about the mute boy who also lurked in those woods, the one the priest had declared to be the spawn of Satan himself, I refused to listen. Kellen wasn’t evil. He was kind, and beautiful, and special, and hurting. He was my friend. And with every summer I spent stolen away with him in those enchanted woods, he grew to become so much more.

But when I return to Glenshire as an adult, grieving and engaged to someone else, all those legends quickly morph into nightmares.

My grandfather had been right about everything, especially the boy.

If only I had listened.

Warning: If you are a sensitive listener or find certain topics to be emotionally triggering, please exercise self-care and select a different book. Devil of Dublin is intended for mature audiences who enjoy dark subject matter, tortured antiheroes, explicit adult content, graphic violence, heart-pounding suspense, fairy-tale-worthy love, and gorgeous Irish scenery. If that sounds like you, then welcome to Glenshire!

Momma Says: 5 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Somehow, this is my first time reading/listening to BB Easton's work, and I'm really kicking myself for the oversight. I went in blind, not knowing anything except it was dark romance with a fair amount of trigger warnings. Fortunately, triggers aren't a problem for me, so I dove in, and wow! Everything about this book just blew me away. The writing, the characters, the storyline, the narrators - yes, this book is just that good. The story flows so well that I didn't even realize how much time had passed as I listened. Kellen and Darby are a couple I won't soon forget. Their passion and intensity can be felt in every word, which is due to both the writing and the narration, in my opinion. Elizabeth Klett and Eric Nolan do such a good job with this book. From the accents to the emotions to every little quirk, the narration brings these characters to life. I've been trying to skirt around the details, so I don't spoil anything, so I'll just wrap it up by saying Devil of Dublin is more than a childhood crush/first love or mafia romance. It's a journey for Darby and Kellen, and at any given point, one or both of them will tug at every heartstring.

The Mark of the Salamander by Justin Newland Virtual Book Tour

Guest Post

My latest historical fiction novel, The Mark of the Salamander, was published in October 2023. It’s the first title in a two-book series, The Island of Angels, which tells the epic story and secret history of England’s coming of age during the Elizabethan era. The second book, due out in October 2024, is The Midnight of Eights.

This blog is about the title, namely The Mark of the Salamander.

First of all, what is a salamander? Well, it’s a spirit of fire.

In Medieval times, Paracelsus, the great Swiss alchemist, identified the four beings or spirits of the elements. While the salamander is the fire elemental, gnomes inhabit the earth, undines swim in the waters of the oceans, and sylphs are air spirits.

As a spirit of fire, the salamander is a lithe creature that occupied the other world and so would only appear to be seen by those who had the eyes to see them. Just like the other three elemental spirits, the salamander had healing properties, and to those it attended, it gave the power of foresight and insight into the future.

Fire is fascinating. It lives, it’s alive. At the hearth, it warms, and yet it destroys. It melts, it smelts, and it cleanses. It houses the phoenix who rises from the ashes, it begets new birth, and yet Hell is full of the stuff.

It’s the living fire, the fire that we breathe that’s inside the air, the flame of life and living. And there’s a ruby salamander mentioned in the novel.

The idea of it came from this image of a ruby salamander pendant. Gold filigree set with rubies, it was recovered from a Spanish galleon off the coast of Northern Ireland some years after the Armada.

So, although it was probably not part of the treasure taken by Drake from the Spanish ship, the Cacafuego, the fact that it was a salamander gave me the idea to use it in the novel.

What about the mark of the salamander? What’s that? Where did the idea come from?

That came from the Ancient Greek myth about the warrior Achilles. The legend goes that his mother dipped him into the River Styx to make his entire body invulnerable, except for the part of his foot where she held him—the proverbial Achilles heel.

That was his identifying feature, in his case, his weakness and, ultimately, his destiny (see image).

In a similar way, Nelan, the protagonist of The Mark of the Salamander, is born with three wavy lines beneath the middle finger of his right hand. That’s the mark of the salamander. That way, his supernatural powers, such as clairvoyance, ESP, and telepathy, can be identified with a physical feature, an actual mark on the body.

1575.

Nelan Michaels is a young Flemish man fleeing religious persecution in the Spanish Netherlands. Settling in Mortlake outside London, he studies under Queen Elizabeth’s court astrologer, conjuring a bright future – until he’s wrongly accused of murder.

Forced into the life of a fugitive, Nelan hides in London, before he is dramatically pressed into the crew of the Golden Hind.

Thrust into a strange new world on board Francis Drake’s vessel, Nelan sails the seas on a voyage to discover discovery itself. Encountering mutiny, ancient tribes and hordes of treasure, Nelan must explore and master his own mystical powers – including the Mark of the Salamander, the mysterious spirit of fire.

THE MARK OF THE SALAMANDER is the first in The Island of Angels series: a two-book saga that tells the epic story and secret history of England’s coming of age during the Elizabethan era.

Excerpt

The weather was dry but bitterly cold as they walked down St Martin’s Lane to the Strand. Eleanor wanted to go home, but Nelan took her gently by the hand and led her towards the top of White Hall.

“Here, come this way,” he said. “Let me show you something.” The stone cross was ahead; the one he’d seen a few days before.

Needle-like, the frost made it shimmer in the winter sun. Together they watched the other couples leave the church. As they passed the cross, each one paused for a moment’s silent remembrance. The men pressed their caps to their hearts. The women bowed their heads. Some shed a solitary tear. Others walked on, lost in thought.

“This is poignant,” Eleanor said. “What’s so special about this cross?”

“Edward I accompanied his wife of many years when she died near Lincoln,” Nelan said. “The King brought her body back to London on a bier. At each of the twelve stops along the way, he erected a memorial to her: a cross; a charing cross.”

“I didn’t know that,” Eleanor said, holding back a tear. “And these ordinary folk, they show her such deep respect. On a freezing day, it warms the cockles of your heart.”

“People behaved the same the other day when I came here. I wanted to share this special place, and what it means, with you.”

“What was the name of his Queen?”

Nelan looked her softly in the eye and whispered, “Eleanor.” “Oh, but that’s… my name,” she said, choking on the emotion. “It’s also called Eleanor’s Cross.”

“Nelan, you brought me here… you thought of me. That’s kind. Thank you. It’s a wonderful story of a love that lasts beyond death and into the afterlife.”

The moist sparkle in her eyes warmed him inside.

“I wonder,” she mused, pressing his hand into hers, “is the fire of love between a man and a woman immortal?”

“Perhaps one day we’ll find out,” he murmured.

Book 4 of the hilarious book series that those in the know will want to read when arriving at Paris airport so they laugh so freaking hard that it will intimidate any suspicious characters looking to abduct them and sell them into the human trafficking game.

Life was not meant to be easy, Simon Yeats’ father used to tell him. Well, it sure as hell was not meant to be this bizarre and witty. Australian ex-pat Simon Yeats shares his stories of travel misadventures and dubious personal introspection with comedic insights into the unusual and uproarious elements of living his life abroad. All while having a sense of Wanderlust as pervasive as Mongol hordes in the 12th century.

From how to negotiate getting abused in Los Angeles when you will only drive at 5 miles/hr., to what to do when locked out of your hotel room in your underwear, to the emotions of attempting the world’s second highest bungee when you have a pathological fear of heights, to how to deal with the trials and tribulations of staying in a youth hostel with travelers who have no respect for the other guests.

Simon Yeats has gone into the world and experienced all the out of the ordinary moments for you to sit back and enjoy the experience without the need to empty your bank account, get squeezed sitting in a middle airline seat, or deal with border security at the Ukraine/Russia boundary..

Big Wednesday was my first day at work as a liftie on the Burgess Creek lift at the Steamboat ski resort as a wide-eyed 20-year-old. I do not remember the exact date, but I am absolutely certain it was a Wednesday because everyone who was present at the resort that day referred to it as ‘big Wednesday.’

Overnight, between ‘ordinary Tuesday’ and ‘big Wednesday,’ the town and resort received a mammoth amount of snowfall. It absolutely dumped. A biblical amount of snow. Even though I do not recall snow being mentioned once in either the old testament or the new testament. But I could have missed the reference.

And Moses went up the mountain at God’s direction and there was fresh dump of powder snow, and he cried out, “ye verily, gonna cut me some wicked turns.”

To get to work on my first day, I take the shortcut straight down the hill to the main road and bus stop. I am decked out in my official Steamboat resort onesie ski suit. The snow level is over my belly button. It is like wading through waist high surf for a half mile.

I scramble onto the bus, and I am on my knees huffing and puffing while dripping with sweat.

An inauspicious start to the day.

About the Author:

Simon Yeats has lived nine lives, and by all estimations, is fast running out of the number he has left. His life of globetrotting the globe was not the one he expected to lead. He grew up a quiet, shy boy teased by other kids on the playgrounds for his red hair. But he developed a keen wit and sense of humor to always see the funnier side of life.

With an overwhelming love of travel, a propensity to find trouble where there was none, and being a passionate advocate of mental health, Simon’s stories will leave a reader either rolling on the floor in tears of laughter, or breathing deeply that the adventures he has led were survived.

No author has laughed longer or cried with less restraint at the travails of life.

Virtual Book Tour: Rising Moon by Katie Groom

Guest Post

Discuss the World you created for the book.

I love talking about the world in the Cardinal Moon Saga! The final book in the series, Rising Moon, really expands on that world, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about it.

In Fixed Moon, the first book in the series, it is established that there is the mortal world — the world we all live in — but there’s also a secret, hidden immortal world within ours.

The main location in the series when it comes to the mortal side of things is Birmingham, Alabama, USA. I chose this location because, at the time I lived there and could go to the locations to describe them as realistically as possible, but also, because Birmingham is known as the Magic City, and I felt that this couldn’t be more fitting.

Birmingham is a magical — haunted — city with a rich history, and it’s actually quite underrated. There’s ghosts that wander the halls of hotels; The Sloss Furnaces are haunted by the men that fell in and were burned to death by the molten steel; that strange fountain in Five Points South (The Storyteller).

I chose The Storyteller fountain as Birmingham’s portal to the immortal realm of Nightbrooke. To me, water holds magic, and this fountain is equal parts creepy and magical.

Once the characters enter the immortal world that goes by many names, they have their own safe haven where they don’t have to hide what they are. Whether they are a werewolf, mermaid, witch, vampire, or something else, they can can just be. At different points in the story, the narrative delves into how the creatures become what they are, and it’s not always the traditional way. For example, werewolves don’t change with the moon or required to be bitten or scratched by another werewolf to become one.

The immortal world in the Cardinal Moon Saga also has it’s own leadership, and, much like most top leaders, they hold their own secrets. Some leaders have secrets about themselves or their families, but some have secrets that affect the greater world. In Rising Moon, the finale of the series, the main characters are looking to out a secret that affects more people than they ever thought possible — and, as they investigate, they find that the secret continues to grow both metaphorically and physically as time passes and things go unchecked.

Deep beyond the enchanted forest of Nightbrooke, there is a graveyard where prisoners — immortals that have broken rules or laws laid down by their leaders — suffer in a dark solitude for eternity, imprisoned in gargoyle form for even the tiniest infractions. It’s up to our heroes — who have done some very anti-heroic things throughout the series — to make things right.

Reunited with his mate Zoie and having taken revenge on some of his immortal enemies, werewolf Hugh has new goals for revenge and justice: Ruin the lives of his remaining foes and end their reign.

The powerful Council of the immortal world has been imprisoning those who oppose them. But now, Hugh is one of the Council and perfectly poised to take the Council from the inside with the help of Zoie and their friends.

While Zoie is busy working on her witchcraft—studying and practicing so that she can protect her loved ones, Hugh probes for the secrets that have kept them in power for so long.

Investigating both openly and in secret, Hugh uncovers more than just the public terror. Even without the mock trials, those who disagreed with the Council often found themselves in the dark, lonely purgatory of being a gargoyle. Trapped and awake for all of eternity, in a rapidly expanding graveyard that ages all who enter.

Even immortals have things they fear more than death.

Excerpt

Visibly, yet quietly, annoyed, Hugh stood with his arms folded over his chest and a deep frown on his face. Still, this was his duty. Hugh held his place just off of the stage in the center of Nightbrooke.

The stage. That’s all it was, in his opinion. Everyone avoided even stepping on it when it was empty. Not out of respect, but out of fear. The only performances ever held on this stage were to overflow those who traveled through the underground world, secret from all mortals, with the certainty that if they put one toe-—one hair, one breath—out of line, they would be punished.

This place—Nightbrooke; Tenatoria; El Reino Mágico—

whatever it was called where that particular inhabitant was originally from—was intended to be a sanctuary for supernatural beings. It was supposed to be a safe place where they could be whatever they were without having to hide it. But this stage showed that this wasn’t sanctuary for everyone.

The only people who wanted to be on that stage were Hugh’s fellow council leaders. He had no desire to ever step foot on those ancient wooden boards, held together by even more ancient magic.

That’s why he hung off to the side. The others, however, relished these moments. Anything to see the fear in the eyes of the people they felt were a lower status than them.

Reon, King of the Abyss—the man who thought he was the King of Everything—was babbling on and on about the alleged crimes that the person before him had committed. He stood proudly on those wooden boards holding a scroll. He was nearly floating above the boards with joy. Hugh could hear Reon’s flutter from where he stood.

The difference between the two of them was a constant tension on the Council. They debated on opposite sides of every decision, to the point where Reon asked if Hugh was opposing him intentionally and just for the sake of being contentious.

Katie Groom grew up in rural Pennsylvania, where she received her bachelor’s degree in Business Management from PITT and her master’s in Employment and Labor Relations from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 2016, she decided to move to Alabama in order to avoid as much snow as possible (and to advance her career in Human Resources).

When she isn’t working, Katie enjoys reading, writing, jokingly critiquing movies and TV, and campaigning that the plural of moose should be meese. She also loves to take in live music (especially Hanson) and traveling, with the goal of reaching each of the continents. Katie’s favorite pastime, however, is spending time with her beloved Shih tzu, Delta.
