The Black Candle Killings Cover Reveal

Conspiracy Series, Book 3

Detective Thriller

Date Published: March 1st 2021

Publisher: Happy London Press

A church going district of North London and a neighbourhood where friendly residents know each other. But when a brutally murdered woman is found next to a burned-out black candle, a strange mark etched deep into her back, the locals became afraid.

Her old boss, a Chief Superintendent in the Met, calls for PI, Tammy Pierre’s assistance. He’s aware of her Caribbean links, and knowledge of Obiah, a voodoo curse found in Trinidad, and used, some claim, to commit bizarre murders. So, is it voodoo? Or just superstition?

A trip to the West Indies reveals some disturbing facts, new evidence of child abuse and murders going undetected for over twenty years.

Returning to London, her situation becomes dangerous – is it all more than Tammy had bargained for?

About the Author

Having never written a dramatic word in my life some thirty years ago, an idea for a short story popped into my head. With the encouragement of my wife and daughter I wrote a tale about a timid and ineffectual man and his pet cat, called Cat and Mouse. Wife and daughter approved so I produced more stories and then joined a writers’ group who also liked what I wrote.

Sir George Everest said, they climbed that mountain, ‘Because it is there.’ The same might be said of writing. Why do we write? because of the idea, the notion, the thought. ‘Because it is there,’ and the irresistible urge to put it down in print.

My inspirations have come from real people, events or situations that have presented themselves. Titles like, I am a Contract Killer, Beads of Blood, Death Zone, License to Kill, are all based on my own lifetime experiences, questions asked, incidents occurring. So far, nobody has been murdered on my watch. But the notion gave rise to the impetus to write my first murder mystery, The Lyme Regis Murders. Could I make the jump after years of writing macabre short stories to a full-length drama? That familiar beating in the gut, said, ‘Yes, try it. Give it a go.’

And so to that cosy coastal town where nothing untoward ever happens. Or perhaps it does. The author seeks to shatter notions, change people’s perceptions, spoil long held views. That was my intention in entering into the world of crime thrillers. I’ve found that ‘nice’ people are not always what they seem. The helpless can be transformed into the most dangerous, the most dangerous become the most harmless. It’s all up to the writer and what they’re hoping to achieve. For me, so far, there have been several children’s books, one collection of short stories, with three more planned and three novels completed, plus a fourth in the mixer.

Whilst a short story might be written with a flurry of adrenalin in the space of a few hours, a book will need more than just a flash of creativity. It will need, perseverance, discipline and dogged determination. But then, isn’t that what is required of every ambition?

What would you do if you suddenly found yourself mistress of an 18th-century plantation?

Esther Rubens is looking forward to getting to know her new community in South Carolina and repairing her troubled marriage. But as soon as she arrives in Charleston her life begins to diverge from the idyllic picture in her mind. Her physicist husband, Melvin, is arrested for driving while black, she inherits a strange English property from a cousin she didn't know existed, and she learns that her great-grandmother Sophie, a brilliant scientist kidnapped by the Nazis, discovered the secret of time travel of all things.

Intrigued by Sophie's cryptic journal Melvin begins to experiment with time travel, but his anger at the police makes him careless. The process backfires, killing him and throwing Esther back to 1750. Attacked by an unknown assailant the moment she arrives, she seeks protection at an indigo plantation belonging to a dashing planter with a dangerous secret, negotiating a deal that guarantees her safety. But she soon realizes she's made a terrible mistake. What she discovers on the plantation is far more horrific than anything she could have imagined.

Overwhelmed, she attempts to flee just as the planter's mysterious, handsome brother arrives from England seeking refuge-and offering an opportunity that's too compelling to turn down. But can he be trusted? And are the two of them strong enough to vanquish the evil that's pervading the lowlands? Only time will tell.

The first title in the Indigo series.

I was getting dressed for my wedding and Pixy was brushing my hair when I heard a commotion downstairs. Several people were yelling and wailing—ululating is the word that comes to mind—and I rushed down to see what was happening, leaving her to follow after me. As I descended the stairs I saw two female slaves, both of them in tears, screaming at Daniel hysterically. It took me a moment to figure out what they were trying to say, and just as I did I saw Jesse run out the door with the two of them following him. It gradually emerged that a young girl had fallen down our well and one of the male slaves had tried to go down after her, but the rope had broken and he had fallen in too.  The rest of the men were out in the fields or away on other tasks and the women who were left on the scene didn’t know what to do. Hence they had rushed to the house.

Pixy began to cry herself, obviously wanting to run after Jesse and the women but worried that she wasn’t supposed to leave me. “Come on,” I yelled, and pulled her by the hand.

In less than a minute we had reached the well, which stood in the yard a ways off from the house. Several of the slave women were looking down into it, wailing and crying. Jesse was lowering himself down, one foot braced on each side for traction. If his legs hadn’t been as long as they were I don’t think he could have managed, but as it was he seemed to be getting a pretty good grip.

“Esther, tie a bucket to a good strong rope and lower it down,” he yelled to me as he descended into the darkness. “Throw a second rope down too.”

“We need a bucket,” I said to the women at the well. “And two ropes.”

One of the women started running and I followed her to the dairy. She made a beeline for a corner where some rope was stashed.

“Don’t got no bucket,” she said.

“There has to be one,” I said.

“They supposed to be here,” she said frantically. “I don’t see none.”

“Where else could they be?” I said.

“By de well,” she said. “But dey ain’t there.”

“Where else?” I said.

“In de shed,” she said, taking off like the Flash.

I ran after her and in another few seconds we had attracted the attention of some of the field hands.

“Bucket!” she screamed as a man stared. He looked confused, then realizing what must have happened he ran to the icehouse next to the river, lifted a bucket full of ice, tipped out the contents, and came running. The three of us ran all the way back to the well and tied the bucket to the rope the other slave had found. The male slave lowered the bucket into the well and threw another rope down, holding tightly onto the end.

“I’ve got her,” I heard Jesse yell up. “But she’s hurt badly. I need to get her up now.”

“What about the man?” I yelled down.

“Broken legs,” Jesse yelled up. “I’m trying to keep his head above water. Hurry or it will be too late!”

They were admiring a statute of two lovers sitting off to one side of the lit path. It depicted what she'd heard about the count. Two lovers in an erotic embrace. She couldn't pull her eyes away. Never had she seen anything like it other than in a museum.

She felt his hot breath on her neck as they stood quietly. His lips lightly feathered kisses along the back of her neck, sending a desirous urge scorching through her body. She turned slightly to face him, and when she did, his lips met hers. It was unlike any kiss she'd ever encountered. It was anything but gentle, but rather the kiss was greedy and needy.

His tongue parted her lips as he desperately explored the depths of her mouth. She opened to him, her desire for him unlike anything she'd felt before. She wrapped her arms around his neck, feeling his hands pulling her bottom closer to his hardened cock. They were lost to the outside world, caught up in their private world.

Suddenly he pulled away, breaking the kiss. "I apologize. I don't know what got into me."

She smiled. "I think you wanted to kiss me, just as much as I wanted you to kiss me. There's no shame in that, Kirkcaldy."

"I had no right. You belong to another," he rasped.

"And we both know the story behind Carlisle and me. That's another facet to my life. One I wish to put behind me. I thought you knew that."

"I do," he replied. "Still, I had no right."

"You had every right. Soon, I hope the earl will grow tired of trying to search for me and will see divorce is the only way for us."

He rubbed his finger along her cheek. "You're a smart, beautiful woman, Lady Caroline. The day will come when the earl will set you free. Then you'll go back to your life, and I'll return to mine."

"And we both know what sort of life I will have. None. My parents have disowned me; I have nowhere else to go. For now, my life revolves around being a friend and companion to your mother."

"For which I'm very grateful."

"Come, let us enjoy the rest of the evening."

He gave her an odd look. "You're simply going to pretend what just happened between us didn't happen?"

"What is it going to take to make you understand, Kirkcaldy?"

"What I want is to forget the outside world. I want you, Caro. I have since the day I met you."

I've always been a creative individual. Writing is just a facet of that creativity...
My careers in public relations in and around the entertainment industry, photography, editing,  artist management, modeling and special event planning all elevated my passion for writing, not to mention gave me a treasure trove for story lines.
I write women's fiction; contemporary romance (as Jamie Salisbury) and historical romance (as JR Salisbury) which is ever evolving. I am fortunate enough that writing (and marketing of said product(s)) is my full-time job, although I always have one or two other projects going at the same time.
I now live in a suburb of Atlanta. Some of my other interests include photography, equestrianism, reading, and of course, travel.
I sincerely hope my writing will entertain, enlighten, and inspire others to pick up the pen and pursue their own dreams. I love to be contacted by readers, writers, and history buffs.

Excerpt 1:

Roman studied the perfection before him with something akin to regret filling his spirit. It should have been different between them. He momentarily questioned his decision before setting the ruby stone on her bedside table. In a whisper, he began to chant the words that would strengthen their connection and seal Mariah’s healing so it couldn’t be undone by anyone, ever.

Blood exchanged will seal my gift

The flesh will stay, no spell will lift

Let the night be filled with dreams

So she won’t remember it was me

Roman lifted his hands, palms up, to begin the next part of the spell using the stone, but when Mariah moved in her sleep and threw one leg out from under the covers, he didn’t know if he could do it. Bare flesh, creamy and soft, slid along the quilt as Mariah moaned in her sleep and spoke his name. A dull light formed inside the ruby stone, strengthening with Mariah’s moans. Roman closed his eyes against the onslaught of desire brushing against his body and soul. It sought entrance, control, and a response. She must be dreaming of him. It was the only explanation. His eyes snapped open when the bed creaked. Heavy-lidded, sleepy eyes opened with a reddish glow lighting their dark depths.

“Mariah?” Roman spoke her name as a question, not fully understanding what was happening, but the stone did. Brilliant red light shot from the ruby’s rough edges, saturating the walls, the floors, and everything in between in its glow. Roman tilted his face as Mariah rose from her reclined position to sit on the side of the bed. A trickle of unease sped down his spine. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Mariah was using the stone against him, and her desire magnified his own, fed off it, and seduced in strong waves. Roman groaned as his cock swelled painfully and his body clenched with need.

“Do you come to me as a warlock, vampire, or as man?”

The question was asked so softly Roman wasn’t sure he heard her voice. Mariah’s eyes blazed with color. She was a temptress, a woman bent on crushing what remained of his heart, and he hated her for it. Roman pinched the bridge of his nose when the truth reared its ugly head, forcing him to accept what was meant to be. He craved her like no other. This would be the one and only night they ever spent together. The spell was cast, and she shouldn’t remember anything, so for once, he let the caged passion soar. “I come to you as all three.”

Snow-Melting Kisses
by Andrea Dalling

Friendship turns to attraction in this scorching bi-awakening romance…

Jayden has been in love with Nate, his straight best friend, for half his life. Because of his conservative background, Jayden is deep in the closet, immersing himself in work to fill the empty place where romance should be.

When Jayden blurts out the truth, Nate is shocked but supportive. He even goes to a gay bar as his best friend's wingman. But after kissing Jayden in a fit of jealousy, Nate realizes he might not be as straight as he thought he was.

Tentative exploration quickly leads to a torrid affair. But what happens when the town's biggest gossip outs them? Can their friendship survive the strain?

This steamy gay romance novel has a happy ending and no cliffhanger.

Momma Says: 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐

I can always count on Andrea Dalling for some truly lovable characters, and Jayden and Nate are no different. Both of these guys are absolutely adorable, and their story is engaging and emotional. I'll admit that so much of the story revolving around the church isn't something I typically pick up, but this author's books always leave me with a smile, and this one did as well. I did like that this story addresses both sides of the religion issue, the inclusive and the radical, and maybe even a little about those riding the fence because that happens as well. The romance is a friends to lovers story and it does include some steamy goodness. The characters are interesting and they feel so real it's like you can reach out touch them. All in all, another great read from this author.
