Just
Things
Diary
of a Serial Killer Book 1
by
Erin Lee
Genre:
Thriller
Sometimes,
the cravings just take over.
Jimmie
Putnam is an ordinary man by any measure. By day, he works as a law
clerk. At night, when he can't fight the cravings, he becomes a
collector. He takes great care of his human Things; buying them
cherry lipstick and reading to them from his journal. When they've
been on their best behavior, he even takes them out of his
freezers...
Sometimes,
the need is just too deep.
Florel
Ross has been mostly invisible since the death of her twin, who died
twenty years ago at the hands of a serial killer. Obsessed with
justice, Florel is willing to risk anything for the answers she
craves: What goes on in the mind of a serial killer?
When
the two yearnings collide, will it be justice or just Things?
Momma Says: 4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wow, just wow. I'm not sure what I expected when I started reading this one, but I have to say that there were times I thought I may have bitten off more than I could chew. Parts of the story are a bit dry and feel more like a case study than anything else, but even those parts were oddly compelling. Jimmie is a deeply disturbed man, but at times, I still found myself empathizing with him - a disturbing thought on its own. This is certainly not one for the squeamish and the descriptive writing of Jimmie's collection and what he does with them is nothing short of chilling.
In addition to Jimmie telling us his story, we get profiler, Florel Ross, who has suffered loss and quickly becomes obsessed with catching the Ice Cream Man. Her narrative is almost haunting as she puts together clues and builds a profile of this horrific serial killer.
To sum it up, Just Things is a dark and disturbing look into the mind of an absolute nightmare of a human being, but be warned - there are no happy ending with the turning of the last page. The story doesn't end here, instead leaving plenty of questions that will hopefully be answered in the next book.

Momma Says: 5 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I thoroughly enjoyed every cringe-worthy moment of Just Things and I thought I'd seen every trick up Jimmie's sleeve. Boy, was I wrong. The twists just keep coming in this second Diary of a Serial Killer installment. I think the most disturbing part of this one is the look at Jimmie's other side, the one that is almost normal, or as normal as he's likely to get. The most surprising thing is what brings out this side of him and who he shares those feelings with. Combine that almost normal side of him with his "nice guy" reasoning and his absolutely horrendous actions, and you have one of the most disturbing stories I've ever read. The ending took me completely by surprise and leaves the reader with some intriguing questions for the next book.
Thing
Fifteen
Diary
of a Serial Killer Book 3
My
name is Beverly. I’m more than a Thing.
Every
town has its legends. I would know, I am one of them. I am the girl
they tell campfire stories about. The “well-liked librarian” who
was going places until she was kidnapped and eaten by the Ice Cream
Man. I am the warning parents tell their children about, the woman
whose remains were never found…
There’s
so much more to my story than how I died.
My
name is Beverly Watkins. I was twenty-seven years old the day I
perished at the hands of a serial killer. For more than a year,
Master Jimmie kept me in his favorite freezer and took me out for
weekly playdates. I was the cherry on top of his twisted ice cream
sundae; the Thing he called Fifteen.
It’s
only the beginning to my story. You see, justice is haunting. And
tonight, I’m in the mood for it. I’m here to set the record
straight, to make sure all the facts are tied up in perfect yellow
bows like the ones they tied around trees for me. I won’t rest
until I’ve told my own story, my way. Which reminds me: I have a
visit to make.
Care
to join me?

Thing Fifteen is a literal and figurative haunting addition to the Diary of Serial Killer series. This one is more about Beverly, or Jimmie's Thing Fifteen, but we also get more answers about Jimmie's upbringing and the things that started it all. The story makes for a good nature vs nurture discussion, at once again, the author has done such a good job of letting the reader inside Jimmie's mind that I found myself feeling a bit sorry for him. Of course, that sympathy doesn't last long when we're reminded of the things he's done and the reason for his current situation. Beverly's story is an interesting idea of the possibility that it's never too late for a bit of retribution and even a little justice. Everything isn't quite tied up in a neat little bow, but considering the subject matter, I wouldn't expect it to be. All in all, a solid addition to the series.
