Wielder World Series
by Nat Kennedy
Reggie Wolfe religiously visits Kyle Landon—his student in Nerve detangling—at the Harpford Disentanglement Center, where the younger man has been incarcerated on trumped up charges. During one of Reggie’s visits, Kyle’s able to warn his teacher of an imminent unauthorized transfer by an unknown shadow agency. Reggie demands help from his sister at the Bureau of Wielder Services but is pressed to take the matter into his own hands when bureaucratic red-tape stymies her actions. Breaking into a secret medical installation, Reggie and August Whalen find Kyle and six other men hooked to IVs, unknown chemicals pumping into their systems.
The three are caught up in a quest to find an antidote for the drugs and discover who is behind the powerful anti-male Wielder organization. On this dangerous road, will they forever remain friends or give in to their growing attraction?
Afflicted to the Core is the steamy third novel of the Wielder World series—gay urban fantasy full of desire, desperation, and dedication born of trial and blood.

Afflicted to the Core is Urban Fantasy with a bit of romance thrown in. That said, some of the terminology leans toward high fantasy - the words aren't new, things like the Nerve, taint, corruption, and wielding, but they don't mean what we would normally think of when hearing them. In fact, I'm three books in and still figuring some of it out. This third installment is longer than the first two, and is more action driven with our main characters working to save Kyle and still maintain the status quo with the government. We're also given more on Reggie's sister and her personal life, and she does play a major role in the story, so we finally get to know her a little better. There is a conspiracy, and some things are answered here while some are still hanging. This one also has a cliffy that's sure to keep us guessing and impatiently waiting for whatever comes next. While I still find a few things a bit confusing, I really liked the growing relationship between Reggie, August, and Kyle, and I'll be interested to see how things progress for these characters.

August Whalen—force Wielder, proprietor of the Black Castle, and smuggler of rare and fine goods—is torn from his sleek and cushy lifestyle by an unwanted discovery in the back alley of his bar: a body. Now, trapped between a male Wielder cult and the Bureau of Wielder Services, August must play a dangerous game with an end goal that shifts from finding a killer to staying alive.
Center of Deception is the next thrilling novella of the Wielder World series—gay urban fantasy full of danger, desperation, and dedication born of trial and blood.

Center of Deception gives us August's story leading up to the main event in book one of the series. We only get a small taste of this character in the first book, and there is so much more to him than what we first see. This book did go a long way toward helping me figure out some of terminology used in the series with an up close and personal look at August's wielding and its various affects. While I could've done without the throwing up parts in the story, the rest was certainly interesting. I wasn't quite sure about August at first, he's definitely a reluctant hero, but the more I read, the more I liked him and found myself hoping to see more of him in the series. While a lot of this book takes place concurrently with book one, I would recommend reading them in order to get a feel for the other characters and how they relate to each other.
Assistant Professor Reggie Wolfe has simple goals: to help his engineering students succeed and to stop male Wielders from falling into Taint without drawing attention from the Bureau of Wielder Services. A select few can Wield the Nerve of the World. Women Wielders do so freely, without any repercussions. For men, it's another story. They fight Taint and Corruption for the same power.
Reggie's easy life upends when Kyle, a young male Wielder, lands at his feet, trapped in his Taint and pursued by the very criminal Wielder cults the Bureau is fighting. As the two work to control Kyle's Taint, Reggie realizes he will do everything he can to help Kyle, even follow him into darkness.
Edge of Desperation is the exciting opening novella to the Wielder World series—gay urban fantasy full of magic, suspense, and dedication born of trial and blood.

This introduction into Nat Kennedy's world of wielders is full of magic and danger for the men born with power. The story focuses on Reggie and Kyle who are a good example of opposites attract, but we don't see much in the way of romance in this first book. I did enjoy getting to know these characters and Reggie's predicament pulls at the heartstrings while you can't help but like Kyle and his sass. That said, it did take me a while to get into the story as I struggled to get a grasp on exactly what was going on. The words used aren't unfamiliar, but their meaning in connection with this world is anything but what we're used to. That in itself wouldn't be a problem except we get little in the way of explanation. Instead, I felt like I was left floundering where a bit of world building could've gone a long way toward remedying that. Even so, everything going on did pique my interest and left me curious enough to continue with the series.
