When it comes to crime drama and thrillers, Angela Kay is a good bet for an intense and gripping read. That remains to be true with her newest novel, Uncovering Justice. This one tackles human trafficking from both sides, the investigators and the victims. While the story isn't overly graphic, what's happening to these women is clear and absolutely heart-wrenching, and there are several scenes that are hard to read without feelings of revulsion and horror, so the trigger warnings in the blurb should be taken seriously. It follows Harper Matthews as she becomes entrenched inside a human trafficking ring that seems to have no limits to its reach. This is a topic that people tend to think of as happening somewhere else, certainly not close to home, but in reality, it happens every day in towns like most of us live in. Uncovering Justice may be a work of fiction, but Kay does an excellent job of shining light on this ugly topic. Human trafficking is a real and present danger that doesn't get nearly enough coverage in media. As far as this particular story, it's everything I've come to expect from this author and then some. The writing is good, the pacing is steady, and from the opening scene to the edge of your seat conclusion, it is nothing short of intense. If you have the stomach for the topic, this one is a must-read.
