EXCERPT (Exclusive Excerpt):

"MANY PEOPLE WITH DIABETES

have problems with their feet. You can prevent serious problems by following basic guidelines. Ask your doctor to explain your risk factors for foot problems.

• Check your feet every day for cuts, cracks, bruises, blisters, sores, infections, or unusual markings

• Use a mirror to see the bottom of your feet if you cannot lift them up.

• Check the colour of your legs and feet; if there is swelling, warmth, or redness, or if you have

pain, see your doctor or foot care specialist right away.

• Clean a cut or scratch with a mild soap and water and cover with a dry dressing for sensitive skin.

• Trim your nails straight across.

• Wash and dry your feet every day, especially between the toes.

• Apply a good skin lotion every day on your heels and soles. Wipe off any excess lotion."

Making sure feet are checked daily helps to address any issues before they become serious or possibly life threatening. I check Roger, and he checks me. When the time comes that we can no longer do that, we’ll use the mirror we bought at the dollar store. This will help us check all sides and surfaces for potential problems.

“Got you all checked, top and bottom, front and back,” says Roger. “Now check me.”

Foot check done, we settle in for some quite afternoon time. Rest is also very important for good diabetics. Roger chooses a nap over watching a movie today. He says I made him get out of bed too early, and he’s tired. Poor Roger.

Numbness or lack of sensation in the legs and feet can prevent a good diabetic from noticing small issues early, and this can lead to great big issues later. Roger and I are tested regularly for numbness by our doctor. So far, we can happily report that neither one of us has neuropathy to deal with. Still, we’re always proactive, and we take precautions to protect ourselves from injuries like blisters, burns, and cuts as much as we can.
