“How do you make it work?” Raith finally asked. “All four of you.”
Could be all five of us, she thought, but she kept that thought to herself. “A lot of communication. A lot of trust. And I work very, very hard to make sure that they each know that they all mean the world to me.”
“Sounds exhausting,” Raith said.
“It can be,” Mikkie admitted. “But I love them, so it’s worth it.” She held the unanswered question in her chest for as long as she could, but finally asked, “You said that it didn’t bother Mark and Nic: knowing I was in the other room this morning making love to Trent. Did it bother you? Or did you just think it should bother them?”
“Both,” Raith said after a long moment of consideration. “Well, I thought it was both… at first, at least. Then I realized that I was only thinking I was bothered on their behalf because… because I kept thinking about how I’d feel if it was…” he stopped and shook his head. “It doesn’t matter. I was wrong. I thought on it, and I realized that I didn’t care, either.”
“Why not?” Mikkie asked.
Raith shrugged. “Because I like the guys; because I feel like I can trust them—even trust them with my life in battle once they’re trained—and, if I’m willing to trust them to do that much, then I’m willing to trust them with you. Plus, the way I see it, I’d rather share you than not have you at all.”
Something in Mikkie that had been growing, waiting, and swelling for a long time erupted then, and she found herself shaking.
“Then have me,” she said.
And, just like that, he was upon her.
